An Octave by Jin Xian-shu
(Lament of a Noble Steed)
“Alack! where doth a saint remain to judge a steed?”
A noble steed neighs in vain, his rueful tears bleed.
Twixt wise and dumb, why oft fate not favour the wise?
High low, low high — should this order be thus decreed?
Fie, foh and fum, the fools crack whips aloud above,
Whereas the gifted, in mud, bowed low, they stampede.
Miles upon miles, carrying loads of hopelessness,
They struggle till they perish neath salt-carts sans heed.
