於潜僧绿筠轩 – 蘇軾

 

宁可食无肉，不可居无竹。
无肉令人瘦，无竹令人俗。
人瘦尚可肥，士俗不可医。
旁人笑此言，似高还似痴。

若对此君仍大嚼，世间那有扬州鹤？

 

At Monk Yu Qian’s Green Bamboo Grove by Su Shi

 

You would rather consume no meat

Than dwell without bamboos, no doubt,

You do lose weight, if no meat you will eat,

But lack of bamboos, you will be a lout.

A loutish mind, no one has pills to cure,

However thin, you can fatten for sure.

Those onlookers must laugh at what I said.

If before bamboos they still dream to bite---

--- Each seems devoted, while lust in his head,

Is there a “Yangzhou Crane” on earth in sight?
