静夜四无邻，荒居旧业贫。

雨中黄叶树，灯下白头人。

以我独沉久，愧君相见频。

平生自有分，况是蔡家亲。

 

Joy at My Cousin Lu Lun’s Visit by Sikong Shu (Tang Dynasty)

 

In dead of night, no neighbours stir in sight,

Alone, a worn abode doth bode its plight.

The yellowed leaves in weeping rain hang low,

A hoary head neath the candle’s dim light.

Ah, long in such a forlorn state I sink,

So self-shamed, yet thy visits me delight—

If any bond in life be fate-arranged,

How could our Cai-Yuan-styled tie not hold tight?
