Meditations in Mountains by Zhang Kejiu (Yuan dynasty)
Sith times of yore, ups or downs, reveries in gloom,
My weary eyne perceive the vast blue,
The shrubs-clad Confucius’ tomb,
The weeds-choked Palace of Wu,
Alas, the Temple of Chu,
Cold crows caw “doom”.
A few thatched cots of mine,
Thousands of books fill each room,
To where I retire, a hamlet, tho' old, divine,
In the mountains, nothing mundane could loom,
Spring water brews wine with pine-bloom,
And it eke boils tea by sprigs of pine.
