Leisurely Musings in Lingao by Su Shi

From the Lingao Pavilion, some eighty paces below,

The great River billows, half its flow, fed by Emei’s snow,

From which, for drinking, cooking, and bathing, I can draw,

Thus, why on earth must I let my homesickness gnaw?

The rill and hill, the wind and moon have no fixed host,

The one who can host them, for he idles the most.

I heard Fan Zifeng hath built a new manor, a garden with a pool,

How could his compare to mine – looking so cool,

Yet, what’s missing, I’d say,

None save the taxes and corvee.
