Message from the Right Honourable the Lord Mayor Councillor Campbell Newman

    Today Brisbane City Council has a program where every Brisbane schoolgirl can be vaccinated against cervical cancer.  And yet, as little as a year ago, protecting the cervical health of young women was unheard of anywhere in the world.
    It is only as a result of the ground-breaking work of Dr Jian Zhou, right here in Brisbane, that the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine was made possible in our lifetime.
    Dr Zhou’s vaccine is one of the most important additions to Council’s immunisation service since the service began in 1931.  Its inclusion makes the Brisbane City Council one of the world’s biggest immunisation providers.
    On behalf of Brisbane, I want to commemorate and pay tribute to Dr Zhou, who has immeasurably improved the lives of so many women and their families across the world.
