Two Poems on Sleeplessness
I
I gaze at flowers, yet no names I know;
I hear faint music—dreams cling, soft and low.
Of all life’s regrets, this one cuts most deep:
To hold a lute, yet fail to make it weep.
II
I slump to bed, call oxen to my plow—
Sound asleep, as if free from sorrow’s throe.
Yet here, an old man on his lonesome pillow,
Finds one night’s frost has turned his whole head snow.
