God bless interns

(2006-07-03 16:30:44) 下一个

Finally had a chance to sit down, surfing around internet, cannot type Chinese though.

Today is my official first day in ward, my resident is a really really nice guy, helping me with my note word by word, showing me the quick tips to do work efficiently, and even spelled some words for me, hehe, so embarrassing.

The problem is, it’s his post- call day, which means he hasn’t slept for 36 hours, which means he needs to get out of the hospital by 2pm today according to the law. So after 2pm, when the clock rang two times, I was suddenly on myself!

The faculty did the staffing round afterwards, Gosh, he spoke so fast, and even more horrible, he liked to play his nice expensive tie around his mouth while he was talking, I could barely hear what he said, not mention to write down the orders he wanted me to change. He just kept talking talking, from epidemiology, prognosis, pathophysiology, risk factors, symptoms, and signs we were suppose to look for, while my pen just froze there because I had no idea what to do, should I write notes now? Should I just listen and come back later? Or should I bring some kind of quite notebook and write a draft? It was 2:30pm, and my pager kept beeping, and I was really hungry and desperately needed to go bathroom.

My tears were about to run out of my eyes, but I tried really hard not to drop it on the sheet I was looking at. Suddenly the faculty stopped, he smiled like a big boy and said, I need to go bathroom. I almost shouted me too! I followed him because I had no idea where the bathroom located. When I looked at mirror in the bathroom, I saw myself, a young woman wearing her favorite purple shirt, looked tired, but eyes were still bright and glowing, I cannot just go down on my first day!

When I walked outside the bathroom, the faculty was standing in the hallway waiting for me, I guess he didn’t want to lose his intern, hehe. I felt warm in my heart because I know somebody is there when I need help. While we were walking back to the ward, I finally managed to speak out for myself, Could you please speak slowly and do not cover your mouth with your tie? I looked at him and said.

He turned his face to me and laughed, Thank you for reminding me, he said, I have this habit, when I get nervous I play my tie. Gosh, am I the one making him nervous? I didn’t bother to ask, as long as I get my work done, I don’t care, hehe. After this conversation, he paid attention to my pace which made a lot easier for me.

6pm, I finally finished all the work, and wrote the conclusion sheet for the one who will be on call tonight. When I gave her the note, she asked me to sit down and go through the patients with her. She is a new intern too, and her first day is on call, I can feel how terrified she is. When I left, she said thank you, I looked back, said sincerely, good luck!

God bless interns.

Because I have to do the round by myself tomorrow, my resident asked me to study the diseases of my patients, go over their sheet, notes, orders, to make sure that, by tomorrow morning 6Am, I have the right answer for my patients. A long night ahead.

Trust me, language/accent is not a problem,as long as one is able to communicate. The former Secretary of State, Dr. Henry Kissinger, has very strong accent. So what, the world listens when he talks (more so when he was on stage). Many kids speak perfectly while working as a shoe salesman (that's perfectly fine, no prejudice to any profession.) Cheer up, we are proud of you!
落花飘零 回复 悄悄话 thank you guys, sorry for the late and short reply.
罢了 回复 悄悄话 No big deal, kid :)). Just remember that "No pain, no gain"/tomorrow will be another beautiful day!

Cheer up!!!
Not until you described your job, did I realize how horrible your job is especially when you are a non-native speaker and the communication between the staff and between doctor and patient is so important.

Just hold on and you'll get there eventually and successfully. We all trust you.

feifeibei 回复 悄悄话 Thanks very much for sharing the very vivid and impressive first intern day. This is the first article I have seen telling the real story of a intern's life. Although your experience was not the worst, I felt a little bit scary when I was trying to put me in your position. But I totally believe that you will definitlly feel much better after several days. The begining of thing is the hardest. God bless you and very best luck to you!
