        Farewell to Severn shore.

Terence, look your last at me,

        For I come home no more.

 

„The sun burns on the half-mown hill,

        By now the blood is dried;

And Maurice amongst the hay lies still

„My mother thinks us long away;

        ’Tis time the field were mown.

She had two sons at rising day,

        To-night she’ll be alone.

 

„And here’s a bloody hand to shake,

        And oh, man, here’s good-bye;

We’ll sweat no more on scythe and rake,

        My bloody hands and I.

 

„I wish you strength to bring you pride,

        And a love to keep you clean,

And I wish you luck, come Lammastide,

        At racing on the green.

 

„Long for me the rick will wait,

        And long will wait the fold,

And long will stand the empty plate,

        And dinner will be cold.”

* 豪斯曼的这首诗，在诗集《西罗普郡一少年》中的编号为第 8 首。 这首诗是一个杀死了他兄弟莫里斯的人在逃亡前与他朋友泰伦斯告别时说的一番话。诗中并未说明为什么他要杀死他的兄弟。但是，很可能，这个故事来自于《圣经》中该隐杀死他兄弟亚伯的故事。为此，上帝惩罚该隐永远在世界上流浪，永不许 再回家园。

       "And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD. And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD. And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering: but unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell. And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen? If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.         诗中第五节提到“收获节”(Lammastide)是一个基督教节日，定于每年 8 月 1 日，也叫“面包弥撒日”(Loaf Mass Day)，是庆祝收获的节日。
