But over a decade since Washington sponsored the violent overthrow of Ukraine’s democratically elected government and started this devastating proxy war.
And war is NOT peace.
This is all just part of the US-led campaign to undermine China, Russia, and other perceived rivals as US/EU power wanes as a result of Neoliberalism and the unprecedented corruption, inequity, debt, and corporate power it ushered in - just as those gassed and beaten in the streets for opposing it and attempting to prevent this predicted - coupled with the strain of the incessant US-led criminal wars of the past two decades.
Which our media is shamefully acting as a willing participant in.
The devastating decade-old proxy war against Russia began when Washington sponsored the violent overthrow of Ukraine’s democratically elected government after it chose realignment and economic agreements with the Kremlin over those offered by the IMF, EU/US, and multinationals like Cargill and Chevron most Ukrainians were wary of. Then along with NATO - which now acts as a U.S. attack dog - backed eight years of brutal military offensives that pit Ukrainians against each other and killed over 14,000.
The question of Taiwan isn’t settled under international law - unlike Palestine, where the very same governments antagonizing China continue to enable and underwrite the far-right rogue Israeli regime’s increasingly brutal, flagrantly illegal military occupation and colonization of others’ land.
China is only ascendant because greedy corporations moved their manufacturing there to exploit cheap labour and weak or non-existent environmental and worker protections, and decimate an ‘increasingly uppity’ middle class increasingly concerned by growing inequality.
The same people who opposed Neoliberalism and the wars noted above also warned about what ‘outsourcing’ would do.
Perhaps it’s time to start listening to them, and pay less attention to those whose failed schemes brought us here ...
Like Palestine, Ukraine has cast a spotlight on the glaring hypocrisy of our press and politicians, and when it’s finally over, we must ensure this important debate continues, as it has the potential to finally bring an end to war altogether by demanding we respond consistently to all military aggression, occupation, war crimes, and human rights abuses, whether by ‘friend’ (which is sadly far more likely) or ‘foe’.

You have absolutely no credibility so long as your phony ‘progressive, rules based order’ Neoliberal government remains inexcusably, criminally complicit in Israel’s ongoing genocide. Five years ago you formally apologized for a previous Canadian government shamefully turning away Jews fleeing the Holocaust, but you’ve failed the modern equivalent of this very same test. How many PM’s from now will we be apologizing for this?
This isn’t war, simply Israel’s increasingly brutal, flagrantly illegal military occupation and colonization of Palestinian, Syrian, and Lebanese territory escalated to the point of Genocide.
In the first four months, Israel slaughtered more infants and children, journalists, aid workers, medics, and doctors than the total number killed in all conflicts worldwide over the past four years - a civilian death toll unprecedented this century.
That’s intentional.
And Genocidal.
Sadly the lunatics in the Knesset, poisoned by a hatred no less abhorrent than antisemitism and fully aware they’re finished as soon as their criminal horror show ends, would rather continue massacring Palestinians than free the hostages.
Hamas’ only demands are Israel stops slaughtering civilians and finally fulfills its LEGAL OBLIGATIONS. The same legally-binding demands made by the ICJ and the ceasefire imposed by the world by the world through the Security Council.
This is what a hate rally looks like, what genocidal intent looks and sounds like, and because the ICJ ruling outlawed such abhorrent displays, signatories have an obligation to sanction everyone in attendance.
Heartening to see so many freed hostages, survivors, hostage and victims’ families calling for an end to this criminal horror show and condemning the violently racist far-right lunatics in the Knesset for the steadily escalating fanaticism and hate-fueled terror that destabilized the country and led us here. And filing suit to hold these madmen accountable.
The far-right rogue Israeli regime never intends to negotiate in good faith and no longer even feigns an interest in peaceful coexistence, so it wants Hamas excluded from the political process because it knows the group - which it covertly supported in its infancy to undermine the PLO and the ‘peace process’ - cannot be intimidated or manipulated like the demonstrably corrupt PA.
What Israel’s doing in Palestine is not the complicated, intractable conflict it is made out to be.
It is a military, political, and economic campaign to deny the Palestinians their right to self-determination and steal their land and resources, deliberately-perpetuated in brazen defiance of the UN and flagrant, systemic violation of the very laws intended to prevent such an injustice.
It does not end because the Israeli government and Zionism fundamentally reject Palestinian rights and statehood.
And the US protects them from the law.
It is the most blatant and longest-running injustice of our times, and anyone serious about peace, justice, human rights, and the rule of law has a duty to speak out and stand against it.
All it would really take to end it is the US to end its defense of Israel's crimes and the world to hold Israel accountable for its decisions.
The Palestinians have already made round after round of concessions, receiving nothing in return but continued Israeli intransigence and brutality.
Achieving this is not nearly as hard as the media and pundits "sympathetic" to Israel so desperately want us to believe.
All it would take is the will.
Increasingly, the world is demonstrating that will through campaigns like BDS, and waiting for their governments to catch up. And more governments are now signalling a willingness to take real steps to bring this to an end once and for all.
Israel has faced virtually no violent resistance for years, yet its brutality and land theft have only increased, and the current government - the most radical, racist, rejectionist in Israel’s brief history - no longer even feigns an interest in peaceful coexistence or even attempts to hide its true intentions.
So the old excuses for the shameful appeasement, inaction, and complicity of our governments no longer fly.
