Most people spend their entire life imprisoned within the confines of their own thoughts. They never go beyond a narrow, mind-made, personalized sense of self that is conditioned by the past.
多数人一辈子被囚禁在自我设限的思维之中,他们从未跨越那狭隘的、由心智所打造、个人化的自我认知--这被过去制约的自我认知。
In you, as in each human being, there is a dimension of consciousness far deeper than thought. It is the very essence of who you are. We may call it presence, awareness, the unconditioned consciousness. In the ancient teachings, it is the Christ within, or your Buddha nature.
在你身上,一如在每个人身上,有个远比思维更为深邃的觉识层面。那就是真正的你的核心本质,我们可称之为“临在”、“觉性”,或“不受制约的觉识”。在古老的教义之中,它就是你心中的上帝或佛性。
Finding that dimension frees you and the world from the suffering you inflict on yourself and others when the mind-made “little me” is all you know and runs your life. Love, joy, creative expansion, and lasting inner peace cannot come into your life except through that unconditioned dimension of consciousness.
找到那觉识层面,将使你和整个世界从受苦中解脱。那痛苦是你强加于自己和他人身上的,因为心智所造的“小我”,是你唯一认知的,并掌控了你的生命。爱、喜悦、创意的延伸,以及心中长久的平静,都必须透过那不受过去制约的觉识层面,才能进入你的生命。
If you can recognize, even occasionally, the thoughts that go through your mind as just thoughts, if you can witness your own mental-emotional reactive patterns as they happen, then that dimension is already emerging in you as the awareness in which thoughts and emotions happen—the timeless inner space in which the content of your life unfolds.
如果你能认出,自己心头一闪而过的念头纯粹就只是念头,如果你能在自己情绪反应的当下,认出它发生的惯性模式,那即使只是偶然做到,那个有觉识的层面已然在你内在以觉性浮现了,念头与情绪就是从觉性中生起的--在这个没有时间性的内在空间里,你生命的种种内容就是在这里展现。
The stream of thinking has enormous momentum that can easily drag you along with it. Every thought pretends that it matters so much. It wants to draw your attention in completely.
思绪之流拥有极大的动能,可以轻易地拖着你与它同行。每个思绪都假装自己是如此地重要,这样才可以获得你全部的注意。

conceptual prisons.

The human mind, in its desire to know, understand, and control, mistakes its opinions and viewpoints for the truth. It says: this is how it is. You have to be larger than thought to realize that however you interpret “your life” or someone else’s life or behavior, however you judge any situation, it is no more than a viewpoint, one of many possible perspectives. It is no more than a bundle of thoughts. But reality is one unified whole, in which all things are
interwoven, where nothing exists in and by itself. Thinking fragments reality —it cuts it up into conceptual bits and pieces. 由于想知道、明白与想控制的种种欲望,心智把自己的意见与观点悟认为是真相。心智说:事情是这样、这样的;
所以,你得比你的心智所想的更为宏观才能明白,无论你如何诠释“你的生命”,或他人的生命、行为,你对任何情况的意见或看法,也都不过就是一种见解,是诸多可能的看法之一,最多也不过就是一堆思绪。但“真实”是一个整体的存在,这里面所有事物是交织的,没有一件可以独自存在。思考碎裂了“真实”,将它切成了无数的概念碎片。
The thinking mind is a useful and powerful tool, but it is also very limiting when it takes over your life completely, when you don’t realize that it is only a small aspect of the consciousness that you are.
会思考的心智是一种强而有力的工具,但是当你没有意识到它只是觉识的一小部分,而让它完全掌控你的生命时,它反而会是局限的。
Wisdom is not a product of thought. The deep knowing that
is wisdom arises through the simple act of giving someone or something your full attention. Attention is primordial intelligence, consciousness itself. It dissolves the barriers created by conceptual thought, and with this comes the
recognition that nothing exists in and by itself. It joins the perceiver and the perceived in a unifying field of awareness. It is the healer of separation.
智慧并非思考下的产物。智慧是深刻的“了知”,你只要单纯的做一件事--全心注意着某人或某事--“了知”就会生起。专注是本初的智性,是觉识本身。它消除了概念化思维所形成的阻碍,于是你认清了没有任何事物可以独立存在。在觉性之中,专注让感知者与被感知对象合而为一,专注是你我分别的疗愈师。
Whenever you are immersed in compulsive thinking, you are
avoiding what is. You don’t want to be where you are. Here, Now.
每当你沉溺在强迫性思维里,你便是在回避事情的实际情况,你不想处于你所在之处--此地、此刻。
Dogmas — religious, political, scientific— arise out of the erroneous belief that thought can encapsulate reality or the truth. Dogmas are collective conceptual prisons. And the strange thing is that people love their prison cells because they give them a sense of security and a false sense of “I
know.”
宗教、政治或科学上的教条,皆源于人们的错误信念--相信思想可以涵括真理或事实。这些教条就像集合式的概念牢笼,奇怪的是,人们却喜欢这些囚室,只因它们带来安全感,以及一种假象的“我知道”。
Nothing has inflicted more suffering on humanity than its dogmas. It is true that every dogma crumbles sooner or later, because reality will eventually disclose its falseness; however, unless the basic delusion of it is seen for what it is, it will be replaced by others.
没有任何东西比教条在人类身上所造成的痛苦更多。事实上,每个教条早晚都会崩解,因为“真实”最后一定会揭穿它虚假的面目;然而,除非人们看穿教条虚妄的本质,否则旧教条将只是被另一个新教条取代罢了。
What is this basic delusion? Identification with thought.
何谓教条虚妄的本质呢?那就是认同于思维。
Spiritual awakening is awakening from the dream of thought.
灵性的觉性,指的是从思维之梦中醒来。
The realm of consciousness is much vaster than thought
can grasp. When you no longer believe everything you think, you step out of thought and see clearly that the thinker is not who you are.
觉识所能觉察的范围,远比思维所能理解的更为浩瀚广阔。当你不再相信你所想的每件事,你便跨出了思维,并清楚知道那位“思考者”并非是真正的你。
The mind exists in a state of “not enough” and so is always greedy for more. When you are identified with mind, you get bored and restless very easily. Boredom means the mind is hungry for more stimulus, more food for thought, and its hunger is not being satisfied.
心智常处于“不满足”的状态之中,因此它总是贪得无厌。当你认同于心智时,你很容易觉得无聊与不安,无聊代表着心智渴求更多的刺激,更多填饱思考欲求的粮食,它的饥渴远没被满足。
When you feel bored, you can satisfy the mind’s hunger by picking up a magazine, making a phone call, switching on the TV, surfing the web, going shopping, or — and this is not uncommon — transferring the mental sense of lack and its need for more to the body and satisfy it briefly by ingesting more food.
当你觉得无聊时,可以随手拿起一本杂志,打通电话、转换电视频道、漫游网络、逛逛街;或者,更常见的方法是大吃一顿,暂时以身体上的口欲,来满足精神上的匮乏欲求。
Or you can stay bored and restless and observe what it
feels like to be bored and restless. As you bring awareness to the feeling, there is suddenly some space and stillness around it, as it were. A little at first, but as the sense of inner space grows, the feeling of boredom will begin to diminish in intensity and significance. So even boredom can teach you who you are and who you are not.
然而,你也可以保持无聊与不安,并观察这无聊与不安是什么样的感受。当你带着觉性去观察感受时,刹那间,某些空间与寂照会在感受四周生起。它一直都在那儿,起初并不明显,但随着心中空间感的不断增长,无聊的感受将开始消失,并不再那么明显与强烈。所以,即使只是无聊,都可以教导你认识“你是谁”与“你不是谁”。
You discover that a “bored person” is not who you are. Boredom is simply a conditioned energy movement within you. Neither are you an angry, sad, or fearful person. Boredom, anger, sadness, or fear are not “yours,” not personal. They are conditions of the human mind. They come and go.
你将发现,“无聊的人”并非是“你”。无聊仅只是你体内一股受限的能量流动。相同地,你也不是一个爱生气、悲伤或满怀恐惧的人。无聊、生气、悲伤或恐惧,既不属于你,也不是你个人所特有。它们是人类的心智状态,总是来来去去、变化不断。
Nothing that comes and goes is you.
那些来去的,都不是你。
“I am bored.” Who knows this?
“我很无聊。”谁是那个知道无聊的人?
“I am angry, sad, afraid.” Who knows this?
“我很生气、悲伤、害怕。”谁是那个知道“生气”、“悲伤”、“害怕”的人?
You are the knowing, not the condition that is known.
你就是那个“知道”,而不是那些被知道的情绪状态。
Prejudice of any kind implies that you are identified with the thinking mind. It means you don’t see the other human being anymore, but only your own concept of that human being. To reduce the aliveness of another human being to a concept is already a form of violence.
任何偏见,皆意味着你认同于思考的心智。这也意味着在你眼中,不再看不见其他人,但只有概念认知上所谓的“人”。将活生生的人简化为一个概念,已经是某种形式的暴力了。
Thinking that is not rooted in awareness becomes
self-serving and dysfunctional. Cleverness devoid of wisdom is extremely dangerous and destructive. That is the current state of most of humanity. The amplification of thought as science and technology, although intrinsically neither good nor bad, has also become destructive because so often the thinking out of which it comes has no roots in awareness.
思考若非根植于觉性,将变得自私与功能障碍。没有智慧的聪明是非常危险,且具有毁灭性的,然而,这却是目前大多数人类的状态。思维会以科学和科技的形式不断地扩大,本质上这无所谓好坏,然而,当有太多是出于缺乏觉性的思考时,也可以变得具有毁灭性。
The next step in human evolution is to transcend thought. This is now our urgent task. It doesn’t mean not to think anymore, but simply not to be completely identified with thought, possessed by thought.
人类进化的下一步,将是超越思考的局限,这是我们的当务之急。但这不是说人类不再去思考,而只是希望人类不要全然认同于思维,而被思维所掌控。
Feel the energy of your inner body. Immediately mental noise slows down or ceases. Feel it in your hands, your feet, your abdomen, your chest. Feel the life that you are, the life that animates the body.
感受你内在的能量,脑中的杂音便会立刻慢下来或停止。在你的双手、双脚、腹部与胸部上去感受它,感受你本然的生命,那让肉体活起来的生命。
The body then becomes a doorway, so to speak, into
adeeper sense of aliveness underneath the fluctuating emotions and underneath your thinking.
身体于是变成了一扇门,通过它你可以更深刻地去感受,那潜藏于你不安的情绪与思维底下活着的感觉。
There is an aliveness in you that you can feel with your
entire Being, not just in the head. Every cell is alive in that presence in which you don’t need to think. Yet, in that state, if thought is required for some practical purpose, it is there. The mind can still operate, and it operates beautifully when the greater intelligence that you are uses it and expresses itself through it.
你的内在,有种可以以你全然的本体(而非只是头脑)去感受的活泼生命。“临在”的当下,身体的每个细胞都是活的,你不需要思考。然而,在此状态中,如果为了某些实际的需要你必须思考,心智就在那儿,仍可运作,而且可以完美地运作,因为更大的本初智性--真正的你--在启用着心智,并透过心智来表现其自身。
You may have overlooked that brief periods in which you are
“conscious without thought” are already occurring naturally and spontaneously in your life. You may be engaged in some manual activity, or walking across the room, or waiting at the airline counter, and be so completely present that the usual mental static of thought subsides and is replaced by an aware presence. Or you may find yourself looking at the sky or listening to someone without any inner mental commentary. Your perceptions become crystal clear, unclouded by thought.
你也许忽略了在你生命里,曾经瞬间闪过一些“不思而察”的片刻,当时你也许正从事着某种体能活动,或是走过房间,或是在航空公司柜台前排队等候,由于你全然地“临在”,平日纷起的思绪沉淀了下来,取而代之的是一种有觉知的“临在”。也许你曾经发现自己正凝视天空或倾听他人说话,但脑中不起一丝意见,你的感知如水晶般清澈,不为念头之云所遮蔽。
To the mind, all this is not significant, because it has
“more important” things to think about. It is also not memorable, and that’s why you may have overlooked that it is already happening.
对大脑而言,这些片刻并不重要,因为还有“更重要的”事情得去思考。它们是如此地短暂且无从记忆,以致虽然已发生,你却没能觉察。
The truth is that it is the most significant thing that can
happen to you. It is the beginning of a shift from thinking to aware presence.
事实是,这些短暂片刻才是你生命中能发生的最有意义的事。它们是从思考转化到有觉知“临在”的开端。
Become at ease with the state of “not knowing.” This takes
you beyond mind because the mind is always trying to conclude and interpret. It is afraid of not knowing. So, when you can be at ease with not knowing, you have already gone beyond the mind. A deeper knowing that is non-conceptual then arises out of that state.
面对“无知”要处之泰然,这会带领你超越心智的局限。因为心智总喜欢推断与诠释,它害怕“无知”,所以,当你可以宽心面对“无知”,你就已然超越心智,而一种更深沉、非概念化的“了知”,也将从这里面生起。
Artistic creation, sports, dance, teaching, counseling —
mastery in any field of endeavor implies that the thinking mind is either no longer involved at all or at least is taking second place. A power and intelligence greater than you and yet one with you in essence takes over. There is no decision-making process anymore; spontaneous right action happens, and “you” are not doing it. Mastery of life is the opposite of control. You become aligned with the greater consciousness. It acts, speaks, does the works.
想要在艺术创作、运动、舞蹈、教学、咨商的领域中有所专精,需要的是努力,这也意味着思考的心智完全不需要介入,或至少是次要的。当一切皆由一个远超过你,但本质上与你合一的力量与本智接掌时,就再也没有什么决定要做了,但你却可以临场适恰地随机反应,这都不是“你”在做。掌握生命与控制它是对立的,你要与更广阔的觉识合而为一,让“它”采取行动、发表言论、完成工作。
A moment of danger can bring about a temporary cessation of the stream of thinking and thus give you a taste of what it means to be present, alert, aware.
危险出现时,思维之流会短暂中止,在此间隙中,你将品尝到何谓“临在”、“警觉”与“觉知”。
The Truth is far more all-encompassing than the mind could
ever comprehend. No thought can encapsulate the Truth. At best, it can point to it. For example, it can say: “All things are intrinsically one.” That is a pointer, not an explanation. Understanding these words means feeling deep within you the truth to which they point.
真理远比心智所能理解的更为全面。思维是无法涵盖真理的,最多只能指向真理,譬如思维可以说“万物在本质上是一体的”,但它只是个指标,并非一个明白的解释,想要懂得这句话的意思,你得在内心真正“感受”这句话所指涉的真理。
