永远需要学的英语

最近几周的周四都有网络会议， 所以每周四只好放弃最喜欢的 Power Pump 课程，而提前一小时上其他课程以错开时间。 昨天下课离开时正巧在台阶上碰到 Power Pump 教练 Penny， 就跟她解释了一下。过去两年我都是她课程的忠实参与者。 她说谢谢我告诉她， 最后她开玩笑地问一句： You do not ditch me?  我其实并没搞懂这句话的意思，但是冲口就说 No ，nono.  后来一直在想我是否回答正确。 我知道ditch 的意思， 但是还是第一次听到ditch在这样的句子里。 今天我又想起来这句话， 于是 Google 了一下。 伟大的  Google Search！终于得到了确凿的答案：

•         ditch (someone) means: 离开，放弃，故意远离某人

To leave, abandon, or purposefully lose someone.

例句：

Would he ditch her and run off with the other woman?

他会抛弃她而和另一个女人逃跑吗？

 

以前我只知道ditch 的意思是沟，动词也不过就是挖沟。 其实原来人家ditch 的意思丰满着呢！看看它的诸多用法：

•           ditch (some place) 离开某地去更好的地方。

To leave a place, especially one that is no longer of use or interest, generally in search of something better.

• ditch (something) 抛弃某物

To throw away or abandon something.

例句：

She'd accused him of ditching his responsibilities and being a poor husband and father. 她责备他抛弃了作为丈夫和父亲的责任。

 

这些是作为动词的意思； ditch 作为名词也有更多“沟沟" 以外的引申含义：

例如：

• die in the last ditch 战斗到最后牺牲，或者说“奋战到流尽最后一滴血”；
• hurler on the ditch 局外人的意见、建议；
• If one sheep leaps over the ditch, all the rest will follow

如果一只羊（领头羊）越过沟渠，其余的都会跟着。（也就是羊群效应。）
Proverb : If one person takes a dangerous or foolhardy risk, others are apt to follow.

谚语: 如果一个人冒着危险领头，其他人则容易效法。

• last-ditch 最后一搏

Final, usually drastic or risky, with failure as the only alternative.

• last -- ditch attenpt 最后一次尝试；
• last-ditch effort 最后的努力
• last-ditch defense 最后的防线；
• Ox-in-the-ditch (来自圣经）： 紧急情况，需要马上处理。

例如：

I was going to miss the important meeting , but my child's sickness was an ox-in-the-ditch situation. （我不得不错过这个重要的会议，因为我的孩子得了急病。）

哈哈， 牛都掉沟里了，当然情况紧急，需要第一时间采取救护措施啦！

 

• snitches get stitches (and end /wind up in ditches)

这句话挺押韵，象绕口令。 但是这句话一点都不友好。 它是说： 如果你向警察或有权威人物告密， 那么你会得到报复，结果会被打进阴沟里！

看看这句话:

You'd better just go ahead and forget what you saw, Tom. Remember, snitches get stitches and wind up in ditches. 

你最好走开并忘记你看到的东西，汤姆。 记住，告密者没有好下场。

我们在国内学的英语都是正规官话，很少学平常百姓说的俗话。 因此虽然我来美国十四年了，也在美国工作了十三年， 但是英语还是在不断地学习中。

今天又学一词： estuary ---咸水和淡水相遇的地方。 学生做科学作业，我在旁边看，不认识这个词，查了才知道，是“河口”， 哈哈，忘了河口是咸淡水交会之处。
