In battles of no renown

My fellows and I fall down,

And over the dead men roar

The battles they lost before.

 

The thunderstruck flagstaffs fall,

The earthquake breaches the wall,

The far-felled steeples resound,

And I lie under the ground.

 

O soldiers, saluted afar

By them that have seen your star,

In conquest and freedom and pride

Remember your friends that died.

 

Amid rejoicing and song

Remember, my lads, how long,

How deep the innocent trod

The grapes of the anger of God.

 

在一场无名的战斗中，
我的战友和我倒在战场，
战斗在死者身上咆哮，

* 这首诗，是《诗歌外编》中的第 19 首。

        这首诗不容易理解。诗中的“我”与战友们都已战死沙场 —— 失败者。他们倒下 的地方也是以前失败的战争中士兵牺牲的地方。这里，诗人想要告诉读者的是:  战争 不管是打赢了还是打输了，总要有人牺牲，对牺牲的人来说，战争总是失败了。所以， 第二节描写了战争的毁灭性场面:  旗杆倒了、战壕的护墙裂了、教堂的尖顶塌了，“我” 也躺到了地下。第三节是对活着的战士说的:  虽然战争可能胜利了，人们 “从远处” 向 战士致敬，但是，他们没有看见阵亡的战士。所以诗人告诉活着的战友:  “请将你们阵 亡的战友牢记不忘。”  第四节，用了《圣经》中的典故:

        “And another angel came out of the temple which is in heaven, he also having a sharp sickle. And another angel came out from the altar, which had power over fire; and cried with a loud cry to him that had the sharp sickle, saying, Thrust in thy sharp sickle, and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth; for her grapes are fully ripe. And the angel thrust in his sickle into the earth, and gathered the vine of the earth, and cast it into the great winepress of the wrath of God. And the winepress was trodden without the city, and blood came out of the winepress, even unto the horse bridles, by the space of a thousand and six hundred furlongs.” (Revelation: 14:17-20)

        “又有一个天使从天上圣殿的至圣所出来，他也拿着一把锋利的镰刀。另有一个 天使从祭坛那里出来，他有权掌管火。他向拿着锋利镰刀的那位天使大声呼喊说:‘伸 出你锋利的镰刀，收割地上葡萄树累累的果实吧，因为葡萄已经熟了。’天使就朝着大 地挥动镰刀，收割地上葡萄树的果实，然后把葡萄树和果实都扔进上帝愤怒的大酒榨 里。马在城外踩酒榨，血就从酒榨里流出来，涨到马的辔头那么高，流到 1600 弗朗（注1）那么远。”(启示录:14:17-20)

        诗里说:“那些无辜的人们”，应该是指战死的将士们，他们的流血牺牲，就像 是《圣经》里提到的“上帝愤怒的葡萄”榨出的葡萄汁吧。
