千萬別舉槍刺向繆斯的園林：

曾夷平廟宇樓臺，但他下令

保護品達的莊園;2 那位悲劇詩人

反復吟唱的淒絕歌聲

曾使雅典城闕免遭焚火劫運。3

1   1642年10月英國內戰期間，查理斯一世率領的王軍逼近倫敦， 密爾頓寫了這首十四行詩並張貼在他的住宅門口。

2  指亞歷山大大帝，他生於生於馬其頓王國的艾瑪西亞地區（艾瑪西亞常用為馬其頓的同義語），於西元前335年率軍攻陷希臘城邦忒拜，詩人品達的故鄉。

3 相傳斯巴達聯軍於西元前404年佔領雅典，將領們在聆聽了悲劇詩人歐里庇得斯的《伊勒克特拉》中的歌隊所唱的哀歌之後，打消了摧毀雅典的念頭。

Captain or Colonel, or Knight in Arms,
Whose chance on these defenceless dores may sease,
If ever deed of honour did thee please,
