Lesson #2: prepare affidavits of support.
My sister collected three letters. Unfortunately my husband and I were too busy to write before the deadline. My sister collected these letters from CHURCHES. She collected two letters from two catholic religious sisters. My sister had volunteered to cook for them for about four years about ten times a year. They knew her well. They listened to her trouble. At the end, my sister asked them to write a letter of support to state that she is a law-abiding citizen, and that she had volunteered in the community to make the world a better place. They were very happy to write such a letter using the letter head of the religious organization. Now this religious organization is well-respected in the area and has an excellent reputation. Most of all, the state where this happened has many catholics. So a letter from a catholic sister is important to convince the prosecutor and to the police officer to drop the case. It carries convincibality and credibility.
She also collected a letter from a couple in the church she attended. This was written in Chinese and she translated it herself. the letter was notorized as well. Now, she has known this couple for ten years. She has helped this couple for ten years. This couple wrote this letter with their hearts, and it would move anyone to some small tears when you read this letter. In the letter, they said how good she was to them and how she warmed their hearts in the years. The couple was in their 80s and my sister had taken care of them.
My sister also was successful in her field. She printed out her accomplishments, awards received, and business licenses, etc. Anything that can help to establish her identify in the community.
Lastly, all these did not turn out to be the most important. The lawyer was not impressed by these. To him, his personal connection with prosecutor Wilson was the most important one.
On that fateful day, the lawyer and the prosecutor talked. The prosecutor flipped through the pages of materials (i imagined) and decided my sister was worthy of his protection. Then he did the unthinkable thing that made my sister's lawyer smile: HE URGED THE OFFICER TO DROP THE CHARGE! The officer was unwilling to do so, but did so relunctantly. They talked in white people's language that white people could understand and quicked reached an agreement: My sister was to apologize in court for her attitude towards the officer and was to promise never to sue the officer or the police department.
To be contined. Lesson number 2: prepare affidavits of support to verify your identify. Let people know who you are since they are already suspicious of your being a spy.
