Vincent Zhou

Kevin Ji

Stephanie Zhang

Shao Yang

Kevin Ji, a graduate of Gunn High School in Palo Alto,

is a computer science student at Stanford.

He is a board member of Michelle Obama's BetterMakeRoom.org,

which provides national education leaders with urgency recommendations for the education gap.

As a high school senior in Palo Alto,

Kevin was discussing strategy to expand higher education opportunities with First Lady Michelle Obama in Washington.

Today was a very special day, because I was able to meet up with my BetterMakeRoom team here in DC with Michelle Obama.

They congratulated me on getting into Stanford. We caught up about life the last four months,

and talked about how to catalyze a shift in educational culture across America.

Kevin aspires ‘to support a culture of cooperation, not a culture of competition,' in his school district.

Kevin was selected by the former First Lady to be one of the seventeen student advisors for BetterMakeRoom, established in October 2016.

To be 17 years old and consult with Michelle Obama about education was a unique experience.

We went to Kevin's home to hear his parents discuss how they raised their only child.

Kevin

Kevin dreamed of becoming an astronaut as a child,

partly as a result of his mother, Jenny, taking him to museums.

Movie theaters, lectures and museum exhibitions became Kevin's weekend entertainment.

Kevin also attended concerts and cultural events on the Stanford campus since childhood.

"I’m giving you this old paddle, you like it?”

"Yes, it's my favorite. I win every time.”

“Did you win last time?”

“Of course”

The family tradition is to play, learn and grow together.

Math was a game for Kevin, enabling him to take college level courses in the 5th grade.

He was free to develop other interests as well,

and in high school took a near 180-degree turn from math, founding a History Club and studying liberal arts.

We found that we still have to start with foundation with a more rigorous, like in China.

So when he was very young, I was reading the chapter book to him. When he was five years old, he could read the chapter book.

I hope he can learn something from the process of playing.

Then when he was in high school, there were a lot of opportunities, for example, he involved into the community later.

However, if he had a bad foundation, he would have to sleep very late, because he had to catch up.

Yang Shao became the first man born in China to become an elected official in the Bay Area of ??Northern California in 2014.

Chinese families value education.  While the second generation are thus accomplished and “Americanized”,

there are still some aspects of American society that most Chinese resist.

In 2015, a Chinese opposition movement against California's SCA5 bill awakened Chinese political involvement.

The SCA5 Senate bill proposes that higher education admission in California be allocated proportionally according to race.

We believe education admissions should be based primarily on merit.

While balance generally makes sense, we believe merit should be the most important variable for higher education and encourage children to study hard.

Due to the midterm elections at the end of the year, the bill was suspended and sent to the House of Representatives for modification to prevent losing Chinese votes.

Hey

Hey, Yang. How are you? Good to see you.

Do you wanna have a seat?

Sure

The victory of this legislative battle greatly increased the confidence and voice of Chinese people, and changed their historical indifference to US election politics.

My responsibility is to continue to speak for the Chinese and their children on this position, and enable more benefits for them.

On November 6, 2018, Yang Shao was elected as the fourth member of the Fremont City Council, winning the highest vote count.

He is still dedicated to the development of the Fremont school district and their students.

I am very happy to see this next generations to represent the hope of our Chinese future.

These students are doing well in school, sports, and civic participation.  They also set a model for our other children.

Collectively, they use their small individual strength to benefit our Chinese community, and also benefit the United States.

From generation to generation, Chinese people have transmitted their beliefs about the importance of children’s education for the improvement of their political status.

For example, Chinese students started an organization at Stanford reflecting these values.

In 2001 the “Huayuan Technology Association” started in this house.

It is the most influential student organization.

In 2012, Baidu co-founder Li Yanhong and Microsoft Online Services Group President Lu Qi served as keynote speakers at the Annual Meeting.

Subsequently, this organization became the largest Chinese entrepreneurs association in the United States,

including influential industry leaders such as Zhu Min, Deng Feng, Xie Qing, Shen Nanpeng, Jia Shilian.

It becomes the epitome of the struggle for mainland Chinese students to establish themselves in Silicon Valley.

This house was the home of now Professor Shoucheng Zhang, an important physicist.  It is also the place where our protagonist Stephanie Zhang Chenting grew up.

My name is Stephanie Zhang, and I am currently a senior at Stanford University, studying symbolic system.

American born Chinese.

Stephanie Zhang,

Stephanie Zhang, daughter of the famous physicist Zhang Shoucheng.

In the summer of 2016, Stephanie and six other Stanford students took a bike ride from San Francisco to Washington, DC, to teach across America.

The students taught various workshops in each of the small towns they visited.

I admire them very much. This kind of love, the willingness to share what they have learned.

As parents, we still really worried about them though.

Their team prepared for their 4,000-mile trip across the United States.

They also interacted with students from the US-China community on the road.

We had such an amazing and unique experience. We want to be able to share that with other students, who are also passionate about education, who are also excited about this great adventure.

Like most parents, Stephanie's mother was worried about the safety of the students who desire to be heroes, but she eventually came to support her daughter.

I told my daughter that I would give them a farewell send-off party, but with the condition that all children must come.

I remember that day vividly. There were three pairs of parents, a total of seven children.

When we were eating, I asked each child to tell me why they were doing this project and what they wanted to teach.

I was actually not ready, but each of them told me why.

Hi everyone, my name is Angela, I am a junior. My goal of my workshop is to get kids more excited about computer science.

I really wanna do neural science with Steph, and I also wanna teach CS.

I realize I really enjoy teaching, because we are teaching English in Taiwan.

I think I was really fortunate to grow up in a family that is really supportive of me.

And I felt like my parents were not exactly like traditional parents.

I think they never try to pigeon hole me on particular career,

you know, limit me to a particular school that I needed to go to.

They really gave me a lot of freedom of choice.

In 2016, Stefanie studied at Oxford, England as an exchange student.

When she was a child, she returned to China for six months, so Stefanie was exposed to a typical Chinese education as well.

Therefore, Stefanie experienced diversified educational approaches on three continents.

I think I want to share my love, and that the most beautiful thing in life is to have curiosity.

The most important point in education is not knowledge per se, but using knowledge to ask good questions.

My clear thinking can be disrupted by unexpected problems by these kids,

but it’s the curiosity about these problems, the spirit of exploration, that allows children to become more successful.

Chinese are known for contributions in innovative technology and education.

Born in Palo Alto, Vincent Zhou became the youngest Chinese athlete in the history of Silicon Valley to enter an Olympic stadium.

Hello everyone, my name is Zhou Zhifang, Vincent Zhou. I am the national champion of figure skating. I started to skate from the age of five and a half.

To date, few Chinese people have contributed to sports.

Due to the emergence of Vincent Zhou, however, the second generation of Chinese are pioneering Chinese excellence in the world of athletics.

When Vincent’s full-time skating training began, the family went spending just 10 days a year together.

The path of professional sports requires great efforts and unseen sacrifices.

2013 was a year of extreme ups and downs for Vincent.

He won three consecutive championships and became the youngest junior champion in American history.

The coaches, referees and officials of the American Figure Skating Association who were dining in a hall all stood up and applauded when Vincent walked in.

In 2013, Vincent experienced a big downtime in his career.

I suffered a knee injury in 2013 while skiing and had to quit skiing to save my body for ice skating.

Coming back from injury, I had depression.

I was really struggling, a lot, with myself and with my parents.

I ended up like… I ended up like not wanting to ski anymore.

Bitterness, this pure concentration, cannot be diluted with a drop of water.

The mystery of death, except for those who have died, is where we don't know the path.

The Asian population is very high here.

We have so many smart kids who are trying to get into HYPMS, all the Ivy Leagues.

The competition is going to be extremely difficult.

And kids commit suicide here every year, because of that.

On May 2, 2009, a 16-year-old high school student in Palo Alto committed suicide by lying on train track.

As of January 13, 2011, a total of six students committed suicide using trains or other means.

This was a cruel awakening, and society must teach children to love life.

Vincent

Vincent sometimes told me out of the blue, ‘Dad you don’t understand me.’

Then I would feel very sad as a father.

But Vincent’s mood eventually brightened.

Vincent

Vincent refuses to accept defeat.

After hard training, Vincent skated beautifully in a New Mexico competition.

Many coaches attributed Vincent’s perseverance to the Chinese cultural emphasis on hard academic study.

Many professional athletes were not true student-athletes, but Vincent’s parents always emphasized academics as well as sports.

He learned to compete in school as well as time management, and these skills helped him with his skating career.

Without time to study, he listened to audiobooks in the car, traveling back and forth from his home in Palo Alto and a training facility in southern California.

然后每次在回南加州的路上,Vincent就会说他有个burning desire to do well.

He had a fire in his heart, he wanted to do well.

Academics were particularly difficult challenge for Vincent, but he persisted.

I also want to go to a good university.

In addition to online courses, Vincent took a few experimental science courses in his spare time, balancing learning with training.

It was a really brave thing to do, for my mom to leave her job, to take care of me. And take me travelling all over the country.

Vincent

Vincent learned to speak to the media based on the reality of his experiences.

When he broke a record as the youngest person with the highest score, a reporter asked if he was happy.

“Only for half an hour,” he replied, and the reporter laughed.  His coach said afterwards that his answer was very mature and wise.

My name is Tammy Gamble, I coach Vincent Zhou.

I’ve been teaching Vincent since he was 7 years old, around 7 years old.

And watching him grow up is fun enough, the development from little tiny boy to the young man.

And he’s grown up to be, it’s been quite a journey.

Vincent

Vincent's example once again illustrates the importance of enthusiasm and perseverance for success.

This applies not only to the arts and sciences, but also to sports.

I know that my self-awareness is very strong.

It has allowed me to improve myself in many ways, because I am able to see what’s happening, able to identify problems.

In the next three years, I will be training for the 2022 Olympics in China. Obviously, the dream is to win gold.

Today’s Vincent changes every single day.

I wouldn’t say there is anytime I discovered the Vincent of today.

I think I discovered the Vincent of today, every single day.

Everyday should be full of new opportunities and challenge.

The value and charm of education is to make hopeless people hopeful and make people's lives better.

Our story is coming to an end. It took three years of filming to produce a 30-minute film.

On December 1, 2018, Stephanie's beloved father passed away,

ushering in a time of unbearable sadness …

Healing through the care of her mother, brother, classmates and friends, and guided by faith, Stephanie walked through a tough time.

Stephanie Zhang began to pursue her Ph.D. in September 2019.

Kevin Ji,

Kevin Ji is currently a third-year computer science student at Stanford University.

As always, he loves history and established the first "Cartography Club" at Stanford University's history.

Kevin

Kevin's charity work did not stop because of his busy schedule.

He went to Los Angeles this year to attend the Betterv Make Room conference hosted by Michelle Obama.

Vincent Zhou,2019

Vincent Zhou became a college student at Brown University in September 2019.

His mother will be moving to the east coast together to assist with his skating practices in Boston 90 minutes away.

A new phase of life has begun, and Vincent anticipates that training for the 2022 Winter Olympics will be brutally difficult.

Throughout the story of our three children, the secret formula of Silicon Valley education has gradually become clear.

Shao Yang, no longer Chairman of the Fremont Joint School District Committee, is still on the City Council.

He continues to be very concerned about educational issues in Fremont.

His focus on the importance of family education is mirrored in his two children, one at Yale and the other at Rhode Island School of Design.

He is respected by his community.  As a father he is big hearted, and as a civic leader, he has strong faith and values.

In addition to the Chinese mother educators, there are many great teachers in Silicon Valley.

Esther Wojcicki, the “Mother of Silicon Valley”, is the mother of three successful daughters. One of them is Susan, the founder of YouTube.

Esther Wojcicki is a high school teacher who taught the NBA star, Jeremy Lin.

Jeremy Lin, he was a very good student.

He got accepted into Harvard, not bad.

But he really wanted to go to Stanford.

I think that was the biggest mistake Stanford made.

The purpose of traditional Chinese education is to change the fate and fortune of families and their children.

American education teaches that everyone has value and can be their personal best.

The purpose of educating for Chinese in Silicon Valley is more on self-discovery, the belief that everyone who comes to the world has a unique mission to fulfill.

Silicon Valley is a magical land, and we prefer to call the Bay Area here.

It is home to engineers, entrepreneurs, scientists, artists and sentimental people.

The second episode of "Silicon Valley Chinese" is not to promote outstanding Chinese, nor to encourage Chinese students to go to the top schools.

We record some courageous hearts, which are the cultural changes of the new generation of Chinese.
