I have been a city guy for my entire life, letting alone, once upon a time, a hard metal music fan; so naturally I never really like country music before. In fact, I remember when I was a boy in China, I was absolutely “allergic” to country music, oftentimes I wondered how could my mother be able to “tolerate” listening to John Denver’s songs repeatedly, that made me "laughing at" her sometime. But, nowadays, I found I started developing some acquired taste about certain genre of country music. I guess, maybe the country music which have infused so much with soft rock music are quite different now comparing with 20 years ago or maybe I have turned mellower as I grew older. Is this a bad sign for aging ?
The other day, I stumbled upon singer and songwriter Taylor Swift’s new song “safe and Sound”. I kinda impressed by the audiovisual and ruminative quality of music which seemingly has a tender and lacerating undertone. In addition, I noticed there have been a flood of covers made for this particular song, interested enough, I discovered few covers actually did very decent job or better jobs than the original for some aspects in terms of letting singers’ voices to release the true emotions that the lyrics would intend to reflect.
Again, that is only my personal opinion, please listen to one piece of cover clips, be the judge yourself.
Note:
1. “Safe and Sound” will be on the soundtrack of the incoming new movie “Hunger Games” that is scheduled to open on March 23rd.
2. Gerald Ko, the singer in the clip is a Chinese dude with a day job as a pharmacist.
3. Below are the lyrics:
just close your eyes
the sun is going down
you’ll be alright
no one can hurt you now
come morning light
you and i’ll be safe and sound
just close your eyes
you’ll be alright
come morning light,
you and i’ll be safe and sound…
