For a long time, Western media has fabricated many rumors about Xinjiang, China, including forced labor, compulsory education, China's alleged genocide of Uyghurs, and even the forced conversion of Xinjiang Muslims to atheism. Is this really the case? With these doubts and anxieties in mind, Mr. Don DeBar, a journalist and current affairs commentator in the US, embarked on a journey to China to find out the truth, and this is what he experienced.

I am a French Muslim convert who spent 22 years in Asia, with the last three years in China. During my time there, I visited Urumqi and Turpan approximately 30 times, as some of my primary clients and now friends are Uyghurs. I converted to Islam in Xi'an, influenced by my interactions with Hui Muslims. From my first marriage, I have two children who are half-Hui. They refused to join me in France when I had to leave China, having been exposed to the negative rhetoric about Muslims in French media and the discrimination and daily Islamophobia we face. If you want to witness the oppression of Muslims, look no further than France or French TV channels like CNews or BFMTV. As a proud Muslim, I can openly say that China is one of the most Muslim-friendly countries in the world. This is the reason I am moving back to Hangzhou as soon as my houses are sold.

What i saw is a tolerant and safe society, and i met lots of very kind Chinese people.
I would highly recommend China as a tourism destination. Much to see and appreciate

I was working in Panjin, a city in the northeast of China a while ago. My Chinese wife and I went into this beautiful, obviously very expensively built mosque. We asked an older man, perhaps a caretaker, how many Muslim families lived in the city. He said 35. We asked how could they afford to build such an edifice? He said the Chinese government built and paid for it. It makes sense to keep the minorities happy.

Thank you for the uplifting personal experience in Xinjiang.
Having lived in many parts of the world, I can appreciate what are the issues that are considered important to most people. Security ranks among the top. Food security, personal security, and security for family. Then of course the future. A secure future for most people is one where you can be sure of steady income, and of curse employment. Health is also ranked top.
Scenes of people arrested on the streets in Xinjiang apparently is a violation of human rights as suggested by the western propaganda. Well, being arrested is never a good thing. However, it depends on which side of the fence you are at. If you are the law abiding citizen, and you see bad people being arrested, then it is a very good thing because your personal security is being enforced. On the other hand, if you are the bad people whose intent is to harm the innocent people, then it is not a good thing.
It stands to logic that those bad people made a lot of noises to the western media that their human rights were violated by the law enforcement. And the western media couldn't help themselves to amplify the complaints made by the bad people because it fits in their narratives, to tarnish China's reputations.
Quite a many years after the turbulent days when people were killed and injured by some criminals who used religion for an excuse to carry out the crime. Well, they might be tolerated i the west, but not in China. China looks dimly on people who violated the law. Now Xinjiang is no longer the place where hot-headed, ill-informed Islamic terrorists claimed the streets. The streets now belong to the law abiding citizens.
Now compare that to many US cities where people openly carry semi-automatic rifles as a proof of manhood, and with the excuse of "self protection". It is the job of police isn't it? Yes, but that is the difference between China and the US. Chinese cops deal with criminals, while US cops are overwhelmed by crimes. Drug addicts roam the streets and injecting themselves with cops looking on, is a sign of a crumbling society. Perhaps USA ought to take care of its own problems first before lecturing others.

I have personally been to Xian 5 years ago. It's close to Xinjiang. There are many many Muslims there. Everyone looks so happy. They dance their to their folk songs in the streets. Muslim shops everywhere. Mosques everywhere. The Xinjiang language is on the RMB. America is lying through thiee teeth saying the Muslim are mistreated. I believe the Muslims in general are treated better in China than most of the Muslim countries.

China is the most friendly non-Muslim country to Muslims. There are Muslim groups in almost every city in China, who live in harmony with the Han (the largest ethnic group in China) and retain their own living habits - from hundreds to thousands of years.
It is difficult for Americans to understand that the Han people in China can always live in harmony with different ethnic groups!

The reports of genocide in Xinjiang always seemed stupid to me.
1) To lock down 12M+ Uyghurs and 8M other residents of the region to the point of genocide, you would probably need 500k+ soldiers. Possibly 1M soldiers since the residents are so spread out. The entire ground army of the PLA is about 1M soldiers. Nobody seriously thinks the PLA is keeping half or more of their ground army in Xinjiang. Even if the PLA had that many soldiers stationed there, they would have to build massive supply centers and have huge amounts of truck traffic to feed all the soldiers plus the millions of people supposedly locked up. We don't see anywhere near the amount of truck traffic and other logistics necessary to maintain anything approaching a genocide.
2) If millions of Uyghurs were locked up, they would be disproportionately the 18-54 demographic since they are the most likely to cause trouble. Taking that many workers out of the economy would mean that you simply don't have an economy. Russia has lost about 2M out of a population of 144M due to emigration and conscription in their military. And Russia already has severe labor shortages. 1-2 million Uyghurs would be the equivalent of 30-60M Americans of prime working age being locked up. We wouldn't have an economy at all. Instead, Xinjiang's economy is steadily growing.
3) A people being genocided would either fight back fiercely or flee. We see that in Ukraine and with the Rohingya in Myanmar or with the Palestinians in Gaza. We don't see any large scale refugee movements to neighboring countries like Kazakhstan even though the borders are massive.
4) In all cases where genocide is occurring, collaborators are hated and often killed. Yet Uyghurs have a massive presence in the Chinese entertainment industry. A Uyghur actress, Dilraba Dilmurat is the most popular and highest paid actress in all of China. Instead of being hated, Dilraba and other entertainers like Guli Nazha are just as popular in their home region as they are in the rest of China instead of being viewed as collaborators.
5) If Uyghurs were being genocided, China wouldn't have any friendly relations with their neighbors in the area. Instead, China is forging many relations with them and Chinese tourists are welcome there.
6) If Uyghurs were being genocided, there wouldn't be tens of millions of tourists visiting Xinjiang. These tourists don't just visit the cities. They visit the villages and fields as well. They bike or hike around as well as more traditional means of transportation. It would be impossible to hide the soldiers, truck traffic, supply dumps, and massive concentration camps needed for a genocide.

I was in Ürümqi two or three days before the Hong Kong turnover. My wife and I planned to go to Hong Kong, but the price of hotels was brutal, so we decided to fly from Xi'an to Ürümqi and spend a few days looking at Turpan and the dead cities in the Tarim Basin. The first two days were a blast, and we had a great time, but the next day, some of the tourist sites were closed because the government was expecting separatists to create an incident or two. We just headed into the desert and thought little of it. The Muslims seemed to be doing well and were generally happy. The complaints were mostly about government jobs going to overpaid and arrogant incompetents. There was a call for more factories to be built so that the locals could benefit from the same type of work that went to the coastal areas in the south. There was little resentment.
A few weeks after we got back, I had a drink with a few people from the Canadian and British embassies and mentioned the separatist groups trying to create trouble for the locals. I was told that we funded them to embarrass the government. That is why I am not surprised by the lies that we hear about China, India, Russia, and many other countries.

Now plan another project and go to several native American reservation and talk to people there. Someone close to me was a teacher at a school in native American reservation so I had an opportunity to visit two of them and I have learned about others as well. Some of the structures ( I don't want to call them houses) they live in don't have plumbing and running water. Some don't even have electricity in them. Many are not heated in upper Midwest where temperatures deep below zero. Many suffer from life style diseases like diabetes. ..etc. Low level of education attainment. Now compare that to Xinjiang. America has tons of problems at home that it needs to fix instead of pointing fingers and looking for non existent accusations of genocide. Looks like China is doing a better job of taking care of its people and social problems.

It would be against China's rational self-interest to do genocide in Xinjiang, because most of China's friends and allies for over two thousand years have been Muslims and Middle Easterners.
China's history is exemplified by the Silk Road, which connected to the Persian Royal Road and the Arabic and Turkic caravansaries, as well as the Treasure Fleet commanded by the Muslim-Chinese Zheng He. In contrast, America's comparatively short history has been exemplified by its numerous invasions and regime change attempts, especially in the Middle East.

Urumqi has developed so much since i visited it in 1995. It is unrecognisable to me now! In 1995, it was drab and rather dusty but, wow, now it's modern with skyscrapers and high speed rails. The old railway then went no further than Urumqi and any journey beyond had to be done on road transportation which was rather poor then.
