Trump = Herbert Hoover II?
Trump = Herbert Hoover II?
The year was 1929. A few months earlier, Republican Herbert Hoover had defeated his opponent in a landslide.
Just like Trump, Hoover had zero elected-office experience.
And now, he was ready to leverage his reputation as an “outsider” and “successful businessman” to execute ambitious goals. It included large infrastructure projects and a plan to send hundreds of thousands of illegal Mexican immigrants home.
But suddenly – everything changed.
On October 24, the stock market cratered, ushering in The Great Depression.
In the months ahead stocks lost 89% of their value… 9,000 banks failed, destroying an estimated $140 billion of depositor savings… and poverty spread across America like a plague.
Who do you think was saddled with the blame?
In the blink of an eye, Hoover – “The Great Engineer” as he was known – turned into a political punching bag.
The publicity chief of the Democratic National Committee coined the term “Hooverville” for the countless shantytowns that sprung up over the country, even in New York’s Central Park.
The term was so successful it inspired Democrats to come up with other ones.
Newspapers were called “Hoover blankets.”
“Hoover leather” was the cardboard used in a shoe when the sole had worn out.
This is critical to understand.
Four years later, Herbert Hoover lost to Franklin Roosevelt in one of the largest political landslides in history.
And then, Roosevelt used his newfound power to change the entire course of America… from our values to financial system.
He confiscated gold…
Gave the Federal Reserve immense power over our economy…
And as Time says, “laid the foundation for the modern welfare state.”
