The film is based on the play, "Failure to Zig Zag," regarding the true story of the Americans aboard the USS Indianapolis before they were struck by Japanese torpedoes in July of 1945. After being hit, the men struggled to survive for five days without food or drinking water in the shark-infested ocean, over 800 men died. Captain Charles McVay III ultimately was blamed and Court Marshaled for the tragedy.

My Great Uncle was torpedoed in WWI, after the war he attended a reunion in Baraboo Wis. The guest of honor was the Uboat Captain who sunk his ship. By all family lore it sounded almost like a spiritual experience for him.
The only captain of a US Navy ship to be court martialed for having his ship sunk by the enemy. A total travesty. The Navy wanted a scapegoat and used McVey as just that. Despicable.
Captain McVay's wife is correct. Considering everything that happened in the war he was made a scapegoat.
excellent film about a tragedy caused by higher ups, not sailors.
In a highly unusual turn of events, the skipper of the Japanese submarine testified at McVay's court-martial. He said it wouldn't have mattered if the Indianapolis had been zig-zagging.
I love how this was like posted a week ago and this movie feels SO old!
Oh, how sad this incident was in our navies history. What's even more sadder is the conviction of the Commander McVays' court martial. We all know what going into our military to serve our nation is. No need to pour salt over the wound as deep as it is already! I think, that is shameful. Thank you.
