Tao 3: Sydney

Flight from Hobart to Sydney took less than two hours. We arrived at Sydney, the largest and oldest Australian city at 9:30pm. One thing to note is that airport security In Australia is quite relaxed. For domestic flights we needed nothing more than boarding passes. There’s no need to take off shoes, and they let you keep notebooks in their bags.  That’s probably what US was like pre-911.

After collecting our bags, we had to walk a long distance to the public pickup area.  With two 40lbs bags that’s pretty painful. Major complaints here.  I much prefer the US airports where you can drive right up to the terminal to pick up someone.

We’ll stay at our friends Yue and Rajesh’s place for the next 4 days. Rajesh’s parents happened to be visiting as well.  We were treated to delicious home made Indian food.  We ate so much the first night we were there it started to hurt.

The days in Sydney went by like slow motion.  It was very relaxing. Some of the time we roamed the city looking for good food.  The rest of the time we just stayed in and worked on the blog.  We enjoyed spending time with Yue, Rajesh and Rajesh’s parents. It felt like home.

Relaxing on a couch in such good weather, it is not right

Sydney’s Chinatown is our favorite.  Not only is the food great, it’s also clean, well organized, and parts of it genuinely felt like places in China. The Xi’An local food there are the best I have tasted outside of China.

肉夹馍, the Sydney version is very close to the original

西安凉皮, delicious rice noodle from my home town, yum..

Without a plan, our days are a bit disorganized here in Sydney.  For us, the only must do here is to see the Opera House and the Sydney Harbor Bridge, and they are at the same spot. How thoughtful!

We have taken these pictures when we “power walked” through Hyde Park, Botanic Garden, Opera House and Circular Quay, in reverse chronological order.  Obviously my photo blogging skills need polishing.

Yes! We got this picture. Now we can go eat.

We also went to the Sydney Aquarium and the adjacent Wild Life Sydney, they are quite good if a bit touristy, which is just the spot for us.

Snakes certainly know how to hang themselves

For you guys working in Fin IT, this here is a Wombat

They certainly can rival the Little Penguins for cuteness

Little Penguins are just unbelievably cute

In our last day at Sydney, the four of us walked alone Sydney’s Coastal Walk to the famous Bondi Beach.  The weather was nice and lots of people are on the trail. It’s becoming quite obvious during our travels here that the Aussies live life in a slower pace. They also seem to be happier in general.

We went to a place called Chairman Mao (湖南人)for dinner. I dunno if I agree with their choice of the restaurant name, but the food was really good.  This place was one of the top Hunan restaurants we have tried anywhere.

The next morning we almost missed our flight because that day coincided with Australia’s daylight savings time, and clocks are adjusted forward by 1 hour (at 2AM). Luckily I set a alarm on my iPhone and it saved the day. We got to Sydney airport without much time to spare. An hour later we are on a Qantas jet heading toward Australia’s Red Centre.
