It was a secret world, he is still a puzzle to the world” -梵高之谜01

I read a book about him when I was in the school, many years ago of cause. I till could remember the day I bought it. It was at school’s ‘sell out’ at the library, it was old, gray, and full of dust, you could hardly see its original color, a cloth cover; its paper, a sort of , yellowish, thick, I could also smell the smell even now, kind of mixture of ink and old paper.

The reading was very slow. I was busy as many of the young now and then. When I was at that age, too much joy out there I wanted to attend. But, I love it. It was my little secret world, when at the time students were not allowed to ‘fall in love” with each other. I was stunded when I read that he had a few women he loved. It was totally a different world; the story was fascinating to me.

At that time, books are scarce. I share everything with my friends everything I enjoy, so I agreed when a friend of mine asked me to let him to read it, but it never returned…. Same thing happened to another book I forgot its English name.

I was lucky, I did not know this book was so invaluable, as Van Gogh is still among one of the arguing personalities even now... Some of his works cost millions while at his time none was sold, or just about at about $25 Franks. One piece, maybe, as i recalled from this book.

Some of his qualities set life-long influence on me. Number one, he loves people, especial those ordinary people; next, he was a ‘failure’ but he never stop; his models were cheap, only $2.00 Franks/ hr; he was a ‘fighter’ to in his life, he was always trying and trying… he never fear of ‘failures’ that most of young persons nowadays even dare not to think about , or  to face in life; some adults too, when business fails; boss got angry about the jobs; jobs are not well paid; endless, and on and on, and on.

His ‘suicide’,  as some people still wonder about evennow , is another thing remained in my heart; -one of the big question marks he left to the world. And he was mad in the end. What a sad story, and sad story always strike people more. as quite numbers of hte the wirters in this blog writes about one of the poets called "顾城" , ( he killed himself in Austrilia, when he moved there ) a very normal looking person when I listened to his talkings back many years ago, at a sort of place in shanghai while the "report-meeting" were popular.

Today, the Internet sent one picture to me, as a picture of the day: said this particular painting was did while he was in the mental hospital, and that reminds me of what we discussed with our lecturer, an lovely young second generation Professor, Dr. Andrea, she said, 'Authors are dead when the products are thrown out,' "directors are dead too?"' was my interruption in the class. I was thinking somehting in relation between the art critics and artworks itself. Some moives maybe?

Still, questions are , for example: why he left Jesus out of his painting? if he painted himself? Why? I know the simplest answer could be: "He was insane, or he was mad"

This is the only painting by Vincent van Gogh on a biblical theme. It shows Lazarus just after having been risen from the dead.”

Lazarus was the brother of Mary and Martha, in whose house Jesus would sometimes stay. The Bible has it that Jesus performed the miracle out of respect for the sisters’ conviction that their brother would not have died if Jesus had been around. However, it was also annoyance about their constant lamenting that made him do it.

Van Gogh was staying in a mental hospital in Saint-Rémy when he painted this work. It is based on an etching by Rembrandt that his brother Theo had sent him. Van Gogh left Jesus out of the picture and focused on Lazarus and the two sisters. Some think Lazarus' face is a self-portrait, because of the beard.

梵高油画欣赏 by Rebecca :Starry Starry Night

Song: Vincent (Starry Starry Night)
Artist: Don Mclean

Starry starry night
Paint your palette blue and grey
Look out on a summer's day
With eyes that know the darkness in my soul

Shadows on the hills
Sketch the trees and the daffodils
Catch the breeze and the winter chills
In colors on the snowy linen land.

Now I understand
What you tried to say to me
How you suffered for your sanity
How you tried to set them free.
They would not listen they did not know how
Perhaps they'll listen now.

Starry starry night
Flaming flowers that brightly blaze
Swirling clouds in violet haze
Reflect in Vincent's eyes of China blue.

Colors changing hue
Morning fields of amber grain
Weathered faces lined in pain
Are smoothed beneath the artist's loving hand.

Now I understand
What you tried to say to me
How you suffered for your sanity
How you tried to set them free.
They would not listen they did not know how
Perhaps they'll listen now.

For they could not love you
But still your love was true
And when no hope was left in sight on that
Starry starry night.
You took your life as lovers often do,
But I could have told you Vincent
This world was never meant for one as beautiful as you.

Starry starry night
Portraits hung in empty halls
Frameless heads on nameless walls
With eyes that watch the world and can't forget.

Like the stranger that you've met
The ragged men in ragged clothes
The silver thorn of bloddy rose
Lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow.

Now I think I know
What you tried to say to me
How you suffered for your sanity
How you tried to set them free.
They would not listen they're not listening still
Perhaps they never will.
