Shakespeare Sonnet   I.

 From fairest creatures we desire increase,
That thereby beauty's rose might never die,
But as the riper should by time decease,
His tender heir might bear his memory:
But thou, contracted to thine own bright eyes,
Feed'st thy light's flame with self-substantial fuel,
Making a famine where abundance lies,
Thyself thy foe, to thy sweet self too cruel.
Thou that art now the world's fresh ornament
And only herald to the gaudy spring,
Within thine own bud buriest thy content
And, tender churl, makest waste in niggarding.
Pity the world, or else this glutton be,
To eat the world's due, by the grave and thee.


Paraphrase:

We desire that all created things may grow more plentiful,
So that nature's beauty may not die out,
But as an old man dies at the hand of time,
He leaves an heir to carry on his memory:
But you, interested only in your own beauty,
Feed the radiant light of life with self-regarding fuel,
Making a void of beauty by so obsessing over your own looks,
With this behavior you are being cruel to yourself.
You are now the newest ornament in the world, young and beautiful
And the chief messenger of spring,
But you are burying the gifts you have been given within yourself

 

英译汉:莎士商籁一 (花开花落)

从绝妙之物中,我们希冀繁衍,
从而或许能定格玫瑰之瑰颜,
可日臻荣盛却反而愈近消亡,
娇嫩的后者或许能记着先前:
但你, 既定情于自己明媚慧眼,
添加自身燃料灼旺眼中激情,
根植肥沃的土地却制作饥荒,
于己为敌,对己之甜美太残忍。
现在你是世界上鲜艳的装点,
唯一的使者炫耀浮华的春天,
把满足在自己的蓓蕾里隐藏,
但温柔的小人却吝啬地耗损。
怜悯这个世界吧,否则贪婪之人,
经坟冢和你,要把世之应得侵吞。



梁宗岱译文:

天生的尤物我们要求蕃盛,
以便美的玫瑰永远不会枯死,
但开透的花朵既要及时雕零,
就应把记忆交给娇嫩的后嗣;
但你,只和你自己的明眸定情,
把自己当燃料喂养眼中的火焰,
和自己作对,待自己未免太狠,
把一片丰沃的土地变成荒田。
你现在是大地的清新的点缀,
又是锦绣阳春的唯一的前锋,
为什么把富源葬送在嫩蕊里,
温柔的鄙夫,要吝啬,反而浪用?   
可怜这个世界吧,要不然,贪夫,   
就吞噬世界的份,由你和坟墓。

Shakespeare Sonnet II.

When forty winters shall besiege thy brow,
And dig deep trenches in thy beauty's field,
Thy youth's proud livery so gazed on now,
Will be a tattered weed of small worth held:
Then being asked, where all thy beauty lies,
Where all the treasure of thy lusty days;
To say within thine own deep sunken eyes,
Were an all-eating shame, and thriftless praise.
How much more praise deserved thy beauty's use,
If thou couldst answer 'This fair child of mine
Shall sum my count, and make my old excuse'
Proving his beauty by succession thine.
    This were to be new made when thou art old,
    And see thy blood warm when thou feel'st it cold. 


Paraphrase:

Forty years from now, when your brow is wrinkled with age,
And you are showing all the other signs of aging,
The pride and greatness of your youth, so much admired by everyone now,
Will be worth as little as a tattered weed:
Then, when you are asked 'where is your beauty now?',
And, 'where are all the treasures you had during your days of lust?'
You must say only within your own eyes, now sunk deep in their sockets,
Where lies a shameful confession of greed and self-obsession.
If you would have only put your beauty to a greater use,
If only you could have answered 'This fair child of mine
Shall give an account of my life and prove that I made no misuse of my time on earth.'
Proving that his beauty, because he is your son, was once yours!
This child would be new-made when you are old,
And you would see your own blood flow warm through him when you are cold.


ANALYSIS

The theme of the necessity of procreation found in Sonnet 1 continues here. The poet's lover is clearly handsome, and much gazed upon by other men and women. But, Shakespeare stresses that this beauty will not last, and that it is selfish and foolish for his lover not to prepare for the loss of his beauty and youth. The only way he can truly prepare is to create a child (a male child in this case) so that his son can carry on his name and all his wonderful qualities, including his unsurpassed beauty. Much debate has surrounded the true identity of Shakespeare young man, but many believe he was the Earl of Southampton, the poet's close friend and patron.

卌载将去,每每冬寒,困践丽颜。
奂佳园地里,深沟遍是。
青春傲,锦裳眸连,
终也难逃,支离野草,荡尽窈窕无价怜。
当被问,美曾何处有,珍盛何焉?

你能应对:“看那童妍”

"我所瑰华,点盘由他,”即证他承你血源。

Look in thy glass and tell the face thou viewest,
Now is the time that face should form another,       
Whose fresh repair if now thou not renewest,
Thou dost beguile the world, unbless some mother. 
For where is she so fair whose uneared womb
Disdains the tillage of thy husbandry?
Or who is he so fond will be the tomb,
Of his self-love to stop posterity?
Thou art thy mother's glass and she in thee
Calls back the lovely April of her prime,
So thou through windows of thine age shalt see,
Despite of wrinkles this thy golden time.
But if thou live remembered not to be,
Die single and thine image dies with thee.


Paraphrase:

Look in your mirror and tell the face you see
That now is the time it should form another [create a child];
If you do not renew yourself,
You rob the world, and prevent some woman from becoming a mother.
For where is the woman whose unploughed womb
Would frown upon the way you plough your field?
Or who is he so foolish to love himself so much but let
Himself perish? [To make a tomb of self-love and not have a child to carry on your beauty]
You are the mirror of your mother, and she is the mirror of you
And in you she recalls the lovely April of her youth:
So through your own children you will see your youth
Despite the wrinkles caused by age.
But if you live your life avoiding being remembered,
You will die single [and childless], and your image will die with you.

仿【念奴娇】格式,乱用平仄:


镜中观己,告那颜,你该另生一脸。

为持娇媚,拒修立,骗世咒母暗。

哪有她秀,竟不穗胎,傲蔑被耕念?

何男喜塚,自爱不要后衍?

 

你是母亲明镜,她天驻你容,依依相嵌。

回头望去,她盛时,犹四月春花艳。

虽脸满皱,越年岁时窗,黄金时彦。

只生不忆,孤逝像随你散。



梁宗岱译文:

照照镜子,告诉你那镜中的脸庞,
说现在这庞儿应该另造一副;
如果你不赶快为它重修殿堂,
就欺骗世界,剥掉母亲的幸福。
因为哪里会有女人那么淑贞
她那处女的胎不愿被你耕种?
哪里有男人那么蠢,他竟甘心
做自己的坟墓,绝自己的血统?
你是你母亲的镜子,在你里面
她唤回她的盛年的芳菲四月:
同样,从你暮年的窗你将眺见 --
纵皱纹满脸 -- 你这黄金的岁月。

Unthrifty loveliness, why dost thou spend
Upon thyself thy beauty's legacy?
Nature's bequest gives nothing but doth lend,
And being frank she lends to those are free.
Then, beauteous niggard, why dost thou abuse
The bounteous largess given thee to give?
Profitless usurer, why dost thou use
So great a sum of sums, yet canst not live?
For having traffic with thyself alone,
Thou of thyself thy sweet self dost deceive.
Then how, when nature calls thee to be gone,
What acceptable audit canst thou leave?
Thy unused beauty must be tomb'd with thee,
Which, used, lives th' executor to be.

俊俏的浪子,为什么把你那份
美的遗产在你自己身上耗尽?
造化的馈赠非赐予,她只出赁;
她慷慨,只赁给宽宏大量的人。
那么,美丽的鄙夫,为什么滥用
那交给你转交给别人的厚礼?
赔本的高利贷者,为什么浪用
那么一笔大款,还不能过日子?
因为你既然只和自己做买卖,
就等于欺骗你那妩媚的自我。

当造化唤你回到她怀里长卧?

SONNET   V.

Those hours, that with gentle work did frame
The lovely gaze where every eye doth dwell,
Will play the tyrants to the very same
And that unfair which fairly doth excel:
For never-resting time leads summer on
To hideous winter and confounds him there;
Sap check'd with frost and lusty leaves quite gone,
Beauty o'ersnow'd and bareness every where:
Then, were not summer's distillation left,
A liquid prisoner pent in walls of glass,
Beauty's effect with beauty were bereft,
Nor it nor no remembrance what it was:
But flowers distill'd though they with winter meet,
Leese but their show; their substance still lives sweet.



      
        

那些时辰曾经用轻盈的细工
织就这众目共注的可爱明眸,
终有天对它摆出魔王的面孔,
把绝代佳丽剁成龙锺的老丑:
因为不舍昼夜的时光把盛夏
带到狰狞的冬天去把它结果;
生机被严霜窒息,绿叶又全下,
白雪掩埋了美,满目是赤裸裸:
那时候如果夏天尚未经提炼,
让它凝成香露锁在玻璃瓶里,
美和美的流泽将一起被截断,
美,和美的记忆都无人再提起:
但提炼过的花,纵和冬天抗衡,
