也谈 Clarity in communication

(2007-05-12 21:43:35) 下一个

Clarity in communication is a life-long goal to achieve. Clarity, same as “voice projection”, has nothing to do with the fact whether you are speaking your native language or a foreign language. Clarity in communication may be a gift to be born with; but it does not mean you cannot improve it.

We had a post-doc before in our institute. He is an African-American and obtained his Ph.D in France. He does not speak a perfect American English; but every body enjoys his seminars. The secret is his “Clarity”. He always begins a new slide with “Next, we asked a question …….”  Immediately, he caught your attention. You know what issue he is going to address. Of course, he always uses one sentence to summarize what he wants to conclude and give you a taking home message.

Clarity is nothing less important in writing than in oral communication. If you cannot write, you cannot advance your career. I do not have too much experience in writing other than preparing manuscripts and grant applications in science. I agree with Mr. “LaoBie” that clarity does not need big words, unless you are writing novels.

My standard of clarity, especially for research grants, is that the reviewers have to understand a sentence without a second thought. If I or my technicians have trouble to understand it in seconds, I have to revise it. No body wants to spend time on guessing. This rule should be applicable to other type of writings.

Thank You!
