Live from Ukraine ????????
Kolinkivtsi Over ten hours awake, hoping those terrifying shots you feel getting closer wont reach your home, the bunker where youre taking cover. Over twelve hours of sirens and desperate screams. The unbreathable air, while weaving between wrecked cars and the rubble of buildings to reach your vehicle, hoping to find it intact. The phone calls and messages, amid curses and prayers, the body count, and the official bulletins. Then, the images. Heartbreaking, as much as the hope that they will be seen by those with the power to ensure that similar atrocities never happen again.
As horrifyingly similar as they are, those broadcast yesterday in the West arent from the first night of the war but from the 1,283rd. Which, like all the others, was almost identical to the one we experienced in Ukraine on that fateful February 24, 2022.
The endless amount of time between now and then measures all the futile efforts to stop the one who knowingly created, released, and carried out that terror.
Ukraine was overwhelmed last night by at least 629 Russian drones and other missiles of various types, produced it should be remembered also thanks to the generous contributions to Russian terrorism by those European countries that, neither in the last 42 months nor in the previous 8 years, have been able to find an alternative to Russian gas and LNG and continue to purchase record quantities.
Enough to finance Putins war effort with 1.8 billion euros a month, according to the European Commissioner for Energy, Dan Jrgensen.
Between direct impacts and debris falling on at least twice as many residential areas, at least 39 districts in Ukraine have experienced harrowing moments like those described. More than any other city, Kyiv has been the most affected by the Russian Armed Forces.
Two of their cruise missiles aimed directly at two 25- and 16-story residential buildings in the capital, filled with civilians. Other vectors of death struck apartment buildings, kindergartens, and private homes in at least four of its districts (Darnytsky, Dniprovsky, Solomyansky, Shevchensky), injuring around fifty civilians and killing 22, four of whom were minors. The youngest victim was a two-year-old girl. Around ten civilians are still missing, while at the time of writing, rescuers continue to feverishly dig through the rubble of at least 80 damaged civilian buildings.
Through his spokesman Dmitry Peskov, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin immediately denied intentionally targeting Ukrainian civilian infrastructure, claiming he had successfully targeted legitimate military targets.
Besides those described, Russian aircraft also struck the Intercity+ passenger train departing for Kharkiv and damaged othertargets that have nothing to do with the military, including the building housing the staff of the EU delegation on a diplomatic mission in Kyiv, the office of the British Council, the headquarters of the newspaper Ukrainska Pravda, as well as the kindergartens and apartment buildings mentioned above, and the Chornobyl nuclear power plant.
Im often asked what Ukrainians think of Donald Trump, expecting angry responses about an American betrayal that resulted in a six-month freeze on military supplies (which led to the collapse of the Avdiivka front, still pressing toward Pokrovsk) and the blackout of US intelligence agencies in Kyiv (followed by the Russian reclamation of much of the territory lost in Kursk), and which was fully realized in Alaska.
This should have been the main topic of a speech requested by RAI Radio Uno by yesterday, which I could not address precisely because of the intense Russian bombing just described.
Strange as it might seem, the American about-face has hurt but not surprised.
Widely anticipated by that MAGA world that views the tycoon as its mentor and inspiration, it had been in the air for at least two years, during which his predecessor in the White House had nevertheless shown considerable hesitation.
What deeply hurts Ukrainian civil society is the double-dealing and treachery of much of the world it fights for.
With data in hand, the B4Ukraine group and the Kyiv School of Economics explained how in addition to the aforementioned revenues from gas and LNG sales to the EU in 2024 alone, foreign companies operating in Russia effectively funded the recruitment of one million Russian contract soldiers by paying Moscow at least $20 billion in taxes every month.
The main financier of Russian terrorism remains a European company: Raiffeisen Bank, which pays $402 million annually. Following Chery Automobile ($222 million), Philip Morris International ($220 million), and Japan Tobacco International ($182 million), another European company stands out: Leroy Merlin, which, despite Pariss declarations and good intentions, continues to be present in the Russian market, effectively funneling $128 million a year to its army.
Hiding behind the fig leaf of tariffs on India, the worlds second-largest buyer of Russian crude oil, is certainly inglorious for the United States. Especially considering that in the third year of Russias large-scale invasion of Ukraine (the 11th year of the war), their European partners purchased nearly $104 billion (plus another $138 billion spent on various fossil fuels).
Way more is, however, for those who, faced with the bodies of Ukrainian children torn to pieces by the Russian missiles they finance, propose responding with a 19th package of sanctions that still excludes turning off the tap through which terror flows.
