慈母手中线，游子身上衣。
Some thread in my kindly mother’s hands,
She's tailoring clothes for my expedition.

临行密密缝，意恐迟迟归。
Sewing them stitch by stitch neatly and carefully,
With worries about the uncertain return from the long long journeys.  

谁言寸草心，报得三春晖。
Even if the inch-tall grass overflowed full with gratitude,
Be hard to repay all the spring days for their graces and bounties.  


 

慈母手中线，游子身上衣。
mother holds the thread in hands
and makes clothes for my journey

临行密密缝，意恐迟迟归。
sew stitch by stitch and worry 
about my tardy return

谁言寸草心，报得三春晖。
who dare say the inch-tall grass’ll

这个版本翻译使用了第一人称，就是作者是“我”，为增加亲切感和身临其境之感。thread不可数， 可以用the 、 some修饰。翻译中要兼顾平衡一下几点，确实是很不容易：1，律：中文强调每个字的平仄，英文翻译强调音节2，押韵3，不丢失、翻译出全部重要意像4，尽量对仗工整，不破坏原作骨架结构5，尽量少的字数和简易的文字6，美做到六点，很难！例如：寸草心一句，中文是一个草字，grass是不可数名词，英文翻译就要是一株草a stalk/blade/stem of grass; 重要的是“心”，这个意象不能丢失，那么，需要的文字旧多些了。还有如何翻译寸字。所以三个字翻译成英文就许多字了。另外，一个英文单词不能像中文那样，一个字就能构成一个完整的意象。例如：线，中文就是一个完整的意象，英文就得是the thread，or some 或者a roll（spool）of thread, 要2到四个单词。
