I’m not sure all Chinese are smart, there are plenty of dumb ones.
It’s a highly competitive society, starting with the education system, and this forces people to think about what they want to do with their own lives so that they can do something meaningful and make meaningful contributions.
Chinese society is much more competitive than western societies in this respect, and I think it forces people to think differently. When Chinese go to the west, it gives them a certain advantage, especially when westerners don’t understand that Chinese live and work according to a different set of social rules.
This is something westerners who have not lived in Chinese society cannot understand.
There is a saying: At present, people's level of effort, there is no need to compare talent differences.
Can not determine whether the Chinese are smarter than others, but the Chinese are certainly the most industrious nation!
btw:
data from iq-research (https://iq-research.info/en/page...)
OH,In addition, Hong Kong and Taiwan are China's regions.
Singapore, South Korea and Japan are all Chinese cultural circles.
Therefore, we should study this issue from a cultural and historical point of view.
I wonder what makes you under the impression that Chinese are very smart.
Chinese are not different from any other groups on the earth, except the outlookings(which are a bit different from white and black people).
Perhaps you think Chinese are smart because of our civilization. In fact history is scientific. There are many reasons why ancient Chinese built such a magnificent civilization and you can read them in some historical books.
Perhaps you think Chinese are smart because you have met a Chinese who is so smart that you began to think all Chinese are smart like him/her. But in fact one person does not mean the whole group. It’s not true. There are both smart people and people who were born with a little lower IQ than normal. And in fact there are not many people who are like this. Most people are just ordinary and average. We are not smarter or more foolish. So are the Chinese.
Perhaps you think Chinese are smart because you once heard Chinese are good at math. In fact it is not always true. Chinese primary school students and junior school students do a little better in math than other countries’. That’s because of the difference of educational system and language. When it comes to higher math Chinese are just like any other groups on the earth.
If you have any further questions, just ask me. Thanks for reading.
Because I'm smart?I am just joking.
But I think the Chinese people's calculation ability is very good.
First of all, IQ is not the be-all, end-all of intelligence.
It is not. There are so many other ways to measure intelligence. And what are you talking about? Emotional intelligence? Artistic intelligence? Be more specific, please.
Okay, so for the sake of this answer we’re going to pretend that what you’re talking about is book-smarts because that’s what most people think of when they think of “intelligence”.
And the answer?
They aren’t. They just work harder. As we know, working harder (usually) means getting better results. That’s what you’re seeing - the better results.
Mostly Chinese are smart, one reason is Chinese schools are like hell. From elementary school to high school students, there are tons of homework. “Less homework, More forest.”
However, the Chinese you meet are always international students. However international students need to pay extra tuition for college. Nowadays Chinese students are everywhere because now Chinese family can afford more. So if you can afford your children’s tuition abroad, you must have the ability to afford more on him or her. So these Chinese are raised well because their parents care about them.
Anyway, Chinese education is not ditributed evenly, and the policies of education are different in different provinces. Urban students always have a better chance in education. And the students who study abroad are almost from urban.
In Chinese, there’s a saying goes “Always see the tree but didn’t see the forest.” Indeed there are excellents Chinese students but they don’t represent all Chinese. In another hand I can hardly answer “Why Do Chinese Like Sport Card?” either.
The bullshit above is just my personal statement.
China has a long civilization. During millenia, China practiced meritocracy and polygamy, punished criminal ruthlessly.
The net effect is that smart people were able to rise to the top of society and had more children. Dumb people who had to resort to crime to make a living were removed from general population.
This evolutionary pressure may not be significant for a country with short history, but has a significant impact on a country with long history such as China.
personally,i suppose the highly intensive academic training during their schooling period is instrumental ,
you can observe a apparent difference between China education system and the one in the US, ———In China ,students are the busiest when studying in middle school.this lasts from7th grade to 12th grade.under the great pressure of entering the university.
during this 6yrs,Chinese students have unimaginable intensive training. it common for them to study late into the night.normally 12pm.
moreover, they got weekly test and monthly exam besides midterm, final exam
all in all, living in such a competitive educational system.they are forced to receive highly intensive training, which to some extent promote the growth of their brain.
In ancient China, we have the four great invention which are famous all of the world, including Papermaking ,Gunpowder,Printing Technique and Compass. In addition to the four great invention. We have many other great invention in ancient China. If you are interested in ancient Chinese inventions, you could visit Chinese museums and search in Google.
And then, this question is “Why are the Chinese so smart?” rather than “What is the Chinese way of working” ,“Why are the Chinese practiced meritocracy”.
First ,as a Chinese ,we all know hard-working can compensate for the deficiency of talent.Maybe we are not rich ,we have no talent. But, if you make enough effort, you will get returned sooner or later.
And some people is the most insular when he or she is working. There is generalisation . The boss require you must finish before the deadline and some people want to promote or get more salary . In order to improve efficiency ,so we should work more and talk less.Of course, there are active working environment.
The wisdom of Chinese people shows in a lot of ways. If you are interested, you should know more about it, not just know it from your side.
Part of it is eugenics. China has a slightly higher average IQ than Western nations, because the one child policy prevented the poor from having more than one child while allowing the rich to afford more than one. This means the more successful, more intelligent people in China have been having the most kids. It's the absolute opposite in America.
The main reason, though, is the education system and work ethic that the Chinese have. They seem smarter, because they're more educated during high school and work harder than Western nations.
There’s no higher, or lower, incidence of “smart” among the Chinese than among any other group.
Think about your sample. Most of the Chinese (or Indians, or whoever) that the average “westerner” meets are individuals who have come to America to pursue advanced studies at prestigious universities, or people who have come over on “tech” visas because they already have advanced degrees and training in a particular field.
Doctors, engineers, technicians….
So, you are seeing the “best of the best”. If you went to China or India, and wandered around the streets and talked with the average joe ….. Chances are he wouldn’t be any brighter than any other average joe anywhere in the world.
As the one answer says… It’s a “meme”… An ethnic stereotype.
According to modern science, the early age education is significant important for a child`s life long development.
Chinese education forces children to learn a lot in maths other subjects from age 5 to 18 years old, which is very useful to maintain an average level of intelligence for the majority.
However, this does not allow some creative thinking.
Comparing with other nations, today`s Chinese does not create that much.
This means, not smart enough actually from the general aspect.
Here's a simple answer:
In China, the school day is generally 10 hours long, with study sessions lasting after school, late at night. It is a six-day school week. This type of schooling has made Chinese people smart. Chinese students that go to American or Canadian schools are also smart because their parents/grandparents or relatives who came from China enforce rules and high standards because it was how they were raised when their family lived in China.
The main reason is the huge population base. just take 3% of 14 billion = 42,000,000. Comparing to well developed and superpower countries, 42m approx. to 13% of US population, 1/3 of Russia, and Japan, 1/2 of Germany, 80% for France, and UK, more than Canada. The second reason is the long history of highly developed culture with accumulation of knowledge and wisdom. P.S. India is matching with China in population, but nothing else.
I think the intelligence of our people kind of shaped by the standards of the society(China).
For instance, you all know that people who do not have the social skill would not be able to get along with others. In my experience with my friends, if they refer to something and your mind do not catch up, they will not explain what it is that they are referring to but will just ignore this topic. As times goes by, if they think you are not at the same IQ level as them they will gradually unfriend you in real life as you are not ‘qualified’.
This is one example I can think of. I am not sure how people grow up in western countries so I cannot make comparisons. But I do know that people in western countries sometimes cannot understand my references of things that others can get easily if they were Chinese and I have to take a step back to explain a little bit if they were westerners. So I guess you guys are not good at jumping steps in thinking.
The answer is being / having Discipline. being raised a certain way also has an effect. Indian people are also very smart. Because if their discipline. compare a kid who has a low discipline lifestyle to another who does not have one. The disciplined child will do his homework an study on a regular basis and surround him self with the same people who can relate compared to a child who does not, the end result is a grown Adult who is smart compared to the other grown Adult who is not so smart
I believe, all mankind are probably equally smart and share the same probability of producing genius, given that under the same education level. The only advance of Chinese is the great amount of population, which means, by the same probability of producing genius, they can produce more genius.
No seriously, they are not smarter or dumber. why? because they are humans like you. IQ is not a reliable way to measure intelligence. The day people is accepting that, then maybe you can sleep more peacefully because it will comfort you that you are not more stupid than chinese (or replace chinese by whatever country people you like).
If You konw Most 10-years old Chinese kids study 10 hours one day. You will know Why Chinese are smart. For they are hardworking peoole. They always push themselves up And up. In history Chinese did not well in science For they almost close their communication withworld. But If they find The right way, they will Never lose behide.
As Chinese, I believe The race characters will push us to The lead position of science And economy. China will be The richest country of the world. For Chinese are smart And hardworking people.
Imagine a school system that seems like slavery. Imagine parents that don’t celebrate accomplishment and constantly push you to be better. Imagine crying and be told how weak you are.
It’s not that they are physically smarter, it’s that they are forced to slave away in school and train their minds to think a lot. The harmful effects of this is they generally lack creativity, personality and imagination.
There’s a reason why Chinese people are usually not CEOs.
In 1996, there were 15,224,282 people born in China. When they reached age six, which was in 2002, about 90% of them were enrolled in primary schools.
When they reached age twelve after six years of primary education, they were admitted to junior secondary schools in 2008. In junior secondary schools, they would study for three years.
After the junior secondary education, things started to change. They had to attend an examination known as Zhongkao in 2011. Only about 50% of them were admitted to senior secondary schools. The other half, some of them dropped out; some of them were admitted to secondary vocational and technical schools.
Three years later, in 2014, there were only about nine million attending university entrance examination known as Gaokao. That’s about 62% of people born in 1996. 74.3% of the attendees were admitted to higher education schools. That’s 45.8% of the people born in 1996.
Of the people who attended higher education, 52% of them went to senior colleges (under graduates); 48% of them went to junior colleges or senior vocational and technical schools.
Considering the people who went to senior colleges, that’s about 23.8% of the people born in 1996.
That’s not the end. The senior colleges can furtherly divided into three tiers. There were about 2,819,500 admitted to tier two or above senior colleges. That’s about 18.5% of the people born in 1996. The rate of tier one is 6%.
Tier one colleges can be furtherly divided into three tiers, normal, 211 project, 985 project. Only 1.2% of the people born in 1996 went to 985 project senior colleges. They’re the ‘smart’ ones you are talking about.
Considering China has 1.4 billion people, 1.2% of them is 16,800,000. Guess we have more smart people then.
Back to the original questions — Why are the Chinese so smart?
Because you’ve only met the best of the best yet. Even though they’re small percentage of the total population, still it’s a huge amount.
Actually ,it is under various pressure of work, society and their families.
On average, the Chinese population is a tiny little bit smarter than the Caucasians. The average IQ of Caucasians is 100, while for the Chinese it’s 105. But from what I observed, most chinese are very close to the average, there are fewer extremely smart Chinese person when compared with the white race. In Caucasian race, there’s a wider distribution of IQ. I’ve seen quite a few extremely smart white people(my IQ is 142 so when I see an extremely smart person that means that person’s IQ is probably above 155). I graduated from a top university in China, and went to an IVY LEAGUE university in the US for postdoc. I felt in that top university in China, there’re a lot of students who are about as smart as I am, and some are a little bit smarter. There were only one or two who are extremely smart. But in that ivy league university, I felt most of my co-workers are dumber than me, but there are quite a few extremely smart guys and gals.
Not every chinese is smart, but the smart chinese are hard working.
Here you go
Here is my friend's baby born last year, Ethnic Chinese from Singapore.
The title of the Facebook video is “starting young”. God bless tiger moms. Mahjong is a game that uses numbers and Chinese characters. Even the Chinese favorite pastime involves math and problem solving. Chinese characters number in the tens of thousands whereas English has 26 letters. This being Singapore, the kid is going to learn thousands of characters plus English alphabet and probably singlish as well as hokkien while he's at it. His little brain is way more stimulated than your average western baby.
Of course asians are seen as smart and if I'm not mistaken the chinese are the most numerous asians.
Funny, I use to hear Japanese make similar claim before their bubble economy burst. History does repeat I guess.
