Visit Mt. Rainier—Mowich Lake

Mowich Lake 中的“Mowich” 在Chinook印第安语中意为“deer”, Mowich Lake是Mt. Rainier NP里面最大的一个湖，它是local hikers眼里的secret garden.

前面两篇分别介绍了Paradise 和 Sunrise，那两个地方是5个入口中最负盛名也是游客最多的地方。特别是现在，如果周末高峰期去得比较晚，入口有时会有1-2miles的汽车长队。位于公园南边的Stenven Canyon入口，主要接待来自Oregon 和Idaho方向来的游客。但是由于Stenven Canyon 附近的步道主要适合backpacking，也没有很好的观察平台，基本上他们左右分流，要么去Paradise, 要么Sunrise.

 

Carbon River 入口和Paradise 一样，整年开放。在那里能领略雄伟的Carbon Glacier（公园内共有25个被命名的冰川），和它融化下来让人畏惧的奔腾河水。但是对一般旅游者来说，那是一个基本上Inaccessible的地方。汽车必须停在公园入口处，trailhead基本上都在离停车场5miles 以外，那些步道更适合backpacking。我们以前是带了mountain bikes, 先骑5miles的土路，然后backpacking，结束后再骑5miles回到停车场。

 

去Mowich Lake 和Carbon River, 需要经过一个mining town，叫Wilkeson。Wilkeson 好像还生活在150年前的西部牛仔世界，街边的建筑活脱脱就是西部电影里的翻版，每每经过，让我浮想联翩。接下来经过只有一个车道的大桥，又让我想起电影“The Bridge On The River Kwai”.

过了桥，路就一分为二，向左去Carbon River, 靠右去Mowich Lake。这是一条没有paved也没有分割线的forest road, 长17miles, 天晴时开时尘土飞扬，一直开到底就是Mowich Lake。

For a day hike, 基本上只有2条步道，1，Eunice Lake & Tommie Peak(recommended only when you camp there with extra half a day to spend)，2，Spray Park Trail.

 

推荐步道：Spray Park Trail

a，Out and Back(推荐），6-8mile/1700feet

b，Loop, 8mile/1900feet: Mowich Lake—Spray Park Trail—Knapsack Pass Trail—Mowich Lake。Knapsack trail 没有维护，有些路段需要route finding, 翻越Knapsack Pass时有一个200feet高比较危险的碎石坡，需要scramble。从Knapsack Pass 到Mowich Lake 大约1.2mile, 下降1000feet, unmaintained.

 

我们非常喜欢这个步道，以前夏天每年都来，主要是人少，景色开阔，野花连绵不绝。如果想看冰川，可以继续向前走到冰山脚下，也可以backpacking去Carbon River 或Sunset Park。

关于熊的问题，这里主要是黑熊，经常能遇到，极少攻击人，我们从来不带bear spray。反而是mountain goats, 比较stubborn, if provoked, will attack, 更应该离他们远一点。
