I tell you how much to raise a child from born to 18 yrs-old in Palo Alto, Cupertino or Saratoga:

 

Based on USDA data, average food and nutrition cost to raise a child to 18 yrs-old is about $250K (no private schooling and private programs).

Average parent spent at at least $1500/month for private tutoring from Grade 6 through Grade 11. So total is: $108K.

Average patent spent about $50K for computers, game devices, play devices and other devices through 18 yrs-old.

Average parent spent about $50K for vacations and travels through 18 yrs-old.

Average parent spent about $20K for visions, dentals, etc through 18 yrs-old.

So, 
for public schooling through 18 yrs-old, each child costs about $478K.
for private schooling through 18 yrs-old, each child costs about $650K ~ $700K.

Normally each family has two kids, so total cost is about $1M (for K-12 only, not including college).
