In Yemen, U.S. Struggles To Navigate Complex Sectarian Landscape

U.S. Ends Freeze On Military Aid To Egypt
White House Announces Major Changes in Aid Relationship with Egypt, Resumption of Military Aid
中东:
Iran deploys two warships near Yemen as rivals continue airstrikes
Obama’s Arms Sales Policy: Promotion or Restraint?
The Obama administration’s pledge to restrain the global arms trade doesn't square with its aggressive promotion of U.S. arms exports
William D. Hartung, February 6, 2014
The United States is far and away the world’s leading arms trafficking nation, with $60 billion in arms transfer agreements last year alone【“合约”不等于成交额】.
In 2011, the last year for which full global statistics are available, U.S. companies and the U.S. government controlled over three-quarters of the international weapons trade.
The Obama administration is proud of its accomplishments on this front and regularly touts the role of U.S. officials — from embassy personnel on up to the president himself — in promoting U.S. arms sales.
Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Political-Military Affairs Tom Kelly underscored this point in April 2013 testimony to Congress:
“It is an issue that has the attention of every top-level official who’s working on foreign policy throughout the government, including the top officials at the State Department,” he said. “In advocating on behalf of our companies and doing everything we can to make sure that these sales go through . . . we take it very, very seriously and we’re constantly thinking of how we can do better.”

$110 billion in opportunities in Middle East
“When we look at the likely export addressable opportunities at a global level for the defence industry, five of the 10 leading countries are from the Middle East,” Moores said. “The Middle East is the biggest regional market and there are $110 billion in opportunities in coming decade.”
Saudi Arabia and UAE together imported $8.6 billion in defence systems in 2014, more than the imports of Western Europe combined. The biggest beneficiary of the strong Middle Eastern market remains the US, with $8.4 billion worth of Middle Eastern exports in 2014, compared to $6 billion in 2013.
The second tier of exporters to the Middle East is led by the United Kingdom with $1.9 billion, the Russian Federation with $1.5 billion, France with $1.3 billion and Germany with $1 billion.
The majority of weapons exports under Obama have gone to the Middle East and Persian Gulf. Saudi Arabia tops the list at $46 billion in new agreements.
The Obama administration has approved more arms sales than any other U.S. administration since World War II.
