INT. JACOB & HANS REAL ESTATE COMPANY -- DAY

Jacob packs a stack of documents into a briefcase. Hans puts up a notice on the door. The notice on the door says: "BUSINESS CLOSED." 

INT. BEDROOM -- HANS' APARTMENT -- DAY

Hans stuffs his suitcases with clothes, food and other personal belongings, ready to move out of his apartment.

INT. HALLWAY -- HANS' NEW HOUSE -- HONGKOW -- DAY

Personal belongings are scattered everywhere along the hallway. Hans steps into the cramped hallway as the ORIGINAL CHINESE RESIDENTS move out.

INT. DR. BEHR AND MINA'S HOUSE -- FRENCH CONCESSION -- NIGHT

SUPEROVER: THREE MONTHS LATER

Several Japanese soldiers pull Dr. Behr out of the house, cursing and yelling. Dr. Behr resists the arrest but fails.

SOLDIER 1

Baga, why don't you obey orders and move to Hongkow?

SOLDIERS 2

Baga, now you shall move to jail.

Mina grabs a soldier's arm, begging and screaming. The soldier gives Mina a hard kick and throws her to the floor. Dr. Behr's SON, LAWRENCE, toddles toward his daddy, whimpering.

Mina pulls Lawrence into her arms, steers him to a corner and uses a paper mask to cover his face. Lawrence cries and tries to take it off. Mina hurriedly stopped him.

MINA

(whispering)

Shh, honey, don't show your face to the Japs. You look just as handsome as your Daddy.

INT. HANS' HOUSE -- HONGKOW -- NIGHT

Hans dines. Mina rushes in, crying in a panic.

MINA

Hans, help. Help me please. The Japs have put my husband in jail.

HANS

What? Dr. Behr's in Jail? I had a ominous feeling this would be likely to happen. Now it did happen.

MINA

What should I do? We have to save him.

HANS

Calm down. I'll find a way out to save him.

MINA

How? How to save him?

HANS

I'm thinking. Let's go.  

Hans and Mina rush out.

INT. PRIVATE COMPARTMENT -- MGM BALLROOM -- NIGHT

Hans and Mina gather with Dragon Brother and a group of anti-Japanese activists.

DRAGON BROTHER

Dr. Behr saved our lives. Now, it's our turn to save his.

ACTIVIST 1

Dr. Behr pulled a bullet out of my belly. Otherwise, I'd not be here alive.

ACTIVIST 2

Dr. Behr's a noble man. He doesn't deserve to suffer in a hell Japanese jail. Go, get him out.

ACTIVIST 3

Many facts have shown the Japs are no match for us. Surely, we're able to defeat them.

DRAGON BROHTER

Brothers, take actions, right away!

ACTIVISTS

Yes, go, go, go!

The anti-Japanese activists start up.

HANS

Let me go with you.

DRAGON BROTHER

No, Hans. You'd take care of Mina, and make sure Anna's safe. How's Anna's family?

MINA

Oh, my God, they might be in danger too. Her father Mark, that stubborn old man, insists on staying where he is and doesn't want to move to the ghetto. Hans, go to Anna's house, right now, hurry up.

HANS

Okay, I go, now.

Hans races out.

INT. LIVING ROOM -- ANNA'S HOUSE -- NIGHT

Three Japanese soldiers rush into the living room. A SKINNY SOLDIER points his gun at Mark's head, directing him out of the house. Mark holds his ground. A SHORT SOLDIER slaps him.

SKINNY SOLDIER

How do you think you are above the Empire's law and don't have to move to the ghetto? Baga!

SHORT SOLDIER

Now you're gonna jail. You'd be punished for not obeying the imperial troops, Shila, shila.

Both soldiers gag Mark with a napkin from the kitchen, and bind him with rope.

Emilia screams at the soldiers. A FAT SOLDIER grabs Emilia's hair and flings her head into the wall. Emilia, covered in blood, falls to the floor, unconscious.

Anna comes home and witnesses the disastrous scene in the living room. She immediately rushes to Emilia's side. The fat soldier grasps Anna's breast from behind and drags her into the bedroom.

INT. BEDROOM -- NIGHT

The fat soldier throws Anna on the bed and takes off his pants.

FAT SOLDIER

(in Japanese)

Moshi, moshi, flowerlike girl, so great, so great.

He jumps on top of Anna and tears off her blouse. Anna struggles, kicking his thighs and biting his arms.

EXT. ANNA'S HOUSE -- STREETS -- FRENCH CONCESSION -- NIGHT

Hans races his car toward Anna's house. Hans pulls up to the curb, jumps out of his car and rushes to the front door.

INT. ANNA'S HOUSE -- NIGHT

He runs up the stairs and sees the door open.

INT. LIVING ROOM -- ANNA'S HOUSE -- NIGHT

As Hans storms into the house, he hears Anna's SCREAMS from the bedroom.

INT. BEDROOM -- NIGHT

Hans bursts through the door and sees Anna struggling with the fat soldier who beats her up.

Hans picks up, from the nightstand, a lamp of solid brass. Aiming the lamp at the fat soldier's head, Hans hits him on the temple. The fat soldier falls down in blood and dies instantly.

Hans helps Anna up and puts his jacket around her shoulders. Anna throws herself into Hans' arms, sobbing. No sooner do they embrace, horror-stricken, than they regain composure and rush into the living room.

INT. LIVING ROOM -- NIGHT

Two Japanese soldiers compels Mark to get out of the house.

MARK

Why should you pull me out of my house? 

SKINNY SOLDIER

This is the order that the heads of Jewish household still living outside Hongkow shall be jailed.

EMILIA

Let go of my husband, let go of him.

SHORT SOLDIER

You baga. You want to die? Shila, shila.

Hans pulls the soldiers away from Mark. The skinny soldier points his gun at Hans. Anna jumps onto the skinny soldier's back, in an attempt to wrestle him down to the floor. The gun slips out of the skinny soldier's hand and falls to the ground. Hans grabs the gun and points it at the skinny soldier.

Holding Anna in front of him as a shield, the skinny soldier  pulls a sword from his waistband and holds it to Anna's throat. Anna screams with fear. Hans has no choice but to drop his gun onto the floor and raise his arms.

HANS

Don't hurt her. I'll go with you.

The short soldier arrests Hans and binds him with rope. The skinny soldier releases Anna and takes Mark into custody. Hans and Mark are pushed out of the house.

Anna cradles Emilia.

ANNA

(screaming)

No, Papa! No, Hans! Oh, Mama...

(CONTINUING)
