INT. WEDDING HALL -- SASSOON HOTEL -- DAY

The four musicians play music while GUESTS enter the wedding hall. Petr reaches into his pocket to pull out a pair of rings, looks at them, and then tucks them back to his pocket, grinning.

VIOLINIST

Hey, kiddo, what are you putting into your pocket?

PETR

Wedding rings.

FLUTIST

How come the wedding rings get in your hand?  

PETR

Uncle Hans asked me to keep them.

DRUMMER

Don't lose them, little guy, be careful.

TRUMPETER

You're too little to be your Uncle Hans' best man.

PETR

Auntie Anna said I was growing up.

Seeing Jacob and Catalina enter, Petr walks toward them to greet. Dr. Behr holds Lawrence's hand. Mina, pregnant again, looks with pride at Lawrence, now five years old.

DR. BEHR

This hotel is so gorgeous. It's owned by Sassoon, a Sephardic Jew, isn't it?

JACOB

Yeah, he's invested wisely in real estate located in the most prosperous commercial area.

INT. ENTRANCE -- WEDDING HALL -- DAY

Emilia looks at Anna in her bridal gown, and makes a final inspection.

INT. WEDDING HALL -- DAY

The WEDDING MARCH begins. Mark walks Anna down the red carpet and hands Anna to Hans. The Rabbi pronounces their matrimony. The Rabbi places a glass beneath Hans' heel. Hans stomps his right foot to break the glass with a hard crack.

As the guests watch, Hans lifts the bride's veil and kisses Anna. Hans and Anna are moved to tears when the guests stand up to cheer and applaud. TO LOVE AND TO BE LOVED, the theme SONG, is HEARD:

SOLOIST (V.O.)

Sun's rising or setting, Moon's full or waning, Sky's serene or sullen,

CHORUS (V.O.)

To love and to be loved, Our bliss is eternal.

SOLOIST (V.O.)

Mount's heaped up or eroded, Sea's placid or ruffled, Earth's dormant or quaking,

CHORUS (V.O.)

EXT. YARD -- SYNAGOGUE -- HONGKOW -- MID 1947 -- DAY

The Rabbi and his yeshiva students, carrying their hand luggage, step out of the auditorium to meet the waiting congregation.

CONGREGATION

Bon voyage. Have a good journey. Farewell, farewell.

RABBI/STUDENTS

Thank you, thank you. Farewell, farewell.   

MARK

What's your destination, San Francisco or New York?

RABBI

New York. The Mirrer Yeshiva is to be relocated in Brooklyn. I'm much concerned about your whereabouts. Tell me, what's your plan?

HANS

We've been applying for immigration to the United States for quite a long time.

ANNA

We're on the waiting list.

RABBI

How about your parents.

EMILIA

We attempt to remove together, and Petr will also be with us, the whole family together.

RABBI

Ah, very thoughtful, Emilia.

MARK

I believe the U.S. immigration laws should consider family reunions. I'm confident.

RABBI

That's good.  I expect to pay you a pastoral visit in the United States, Mark.

MARK

I'm looking forward to meeting you there.

RABBI

Hey, Dr. Behr, is it true that you'll go to Canada?

DR. BEHR

Yes, I'll leave for Canada next month, with my wife and children.

RABBI

It sounds great. How about you, Jacob?

JACOB

I haven't decided yet. Maybe Palestine, or South America. But I'll never return to Europe.

TRUMPETER

Why? Too much nightmare?

DRUMMER

Sure, nobody wants to be reminded of tragedies that have ever happened.

VIOLINIST

Well, I'm very nostalgic and sentimental. I still dream of playing on the stage in Vienna one day.

FLUTIST

To be serious, I propose that we'd set up our new orchestra in Australia, where we could meet our old friends since our conductor, composer and ballerinas are now gathering there. 

VIOLINIST/DRUMMER/TRUMPETER

Hear! Hear! We agree. Let's consider it more seriously.
