INT. HANS' ROOM -- GOTHIC NIGHTCLUB -- DAY

Hans' room at the back of the nightclub is dimly lit and untidy. The door opens. Hans staggers in. He sweeps everything off of his table and throws away the portrait drawn by Anna. The portrait misses the trash can and falls to the floor. Sad and furious, Hans wails, takes a bottle of wine and drinks in large gulps.

HANS

What a snob. He treats me like dirt. I'm a jerk, a loser...

Rose knocks and enters. She caresses Hans' hair with her hand. Hans buries his face on Rose's shoulder, whimpering.

ROSE

Thank you for protecting me.

HANS

Oh, Rose, I'm not good enough for Anna. I love her so much, but her father warns me that I stay away from his daughter.

Rose pats him on the back, trying to console him.

ROSE

Shh...

Rose raises Hans' head up, wipes away his tears, and looks at him in the eyes.

ROSE (CONT'D)

Listen, Hans, Anna is your holy Goddess. Don't give up hope for your happiness. Her father will come around.

EXT. STREETS -- NIGHT

Hans gives Rose a ride on his motorcycle. Rose holds her arms tightly around his waist.

EXT. ROSENFELDS' HOUSE -- NIGHT

Hans' motorcycle passes Anna's house. From a distance, Hans sees Anna standing at the gate of her house.

ROSE

Look, Anna's waiting for you.

Hans speeds up.

ROSE (CONT'D)

Stop, Hans. Go to Anna. I can walk home. Stop, please, stop.

HANS

I have to forget Anna. You can help me!

EXT. ROSENFELDS' HOUSE -- NIGHT

Anna sees Hans driving by with Rose and waves him over.

ANNA

Hans, Hans...

Hans passes by and disappears out of sight. Anna looks as if she were punched in the gut. She leans against the gate, tears streaming down her cheeks.

INT. CORRIDOR -- HANS' ROOM -- GOTHIC NIGHTCLUB -- NIGHT

Anna finds the spare key and opens the door.

INT. HANS' ROOM -- NIGHT

The room is empty. Anna sees the portrait abandoned on the floor. Anna picks it up, dusts it off, and now even more sad, she leaves with the portrait under her arm.

EXT. OPERA BALLET THEATER -- NIGHT

SPECTATORS assemble in front of the opera ballet theater, ready to enjoy the performance.

INT. OPERA BALLET THEATER -- NIGHT

The hall is full of audience. MUSIC OF TSCHAIKOWSKY is heard. Hans watches SWAN LAKE while Rose, excited, looks at Hans from time to time.

On the stage, ODETTE, the white swan at the lakeside, emotes to PRINCE SIEGFRIED of her coming death because of his treachery.

Hans, gripped with emotion, stands up, leaves the seat, and rushes out of the theater.

EXT. STREETS -- NIGHT

Hans drives his motorcycle and speeds up.

SUPEROVER: KRISTALLNACHT, NOVEMBER 9, 1938

EXT. SYNAGOGUE -- NIGHT

The synagogue is on fire, its windows smashed and glass scattered all over the courtyard. Mounds of Jewish BIBLES and prayer BOOKS are in flames. Handles of the holy TORAH SCROLLS are charred in the simmering ashes.

A Nazi SOLDIER whips a RABBI who kneels on the ground and protects his head with his hands, his eyes closed, praying.

INT. OPERA BALLET THEATER -- NIGHT

Rose sits alone, trying to pay attention to the ballet. Tumult suddenly erupts when the lights are turned on and a group of Nazi SOLDIERS storm down the aisles. The orchestra stops playing and the dancers on stage stop dancing. The Nazi COMMANDER shouts orders in German. Nazi soldiers head to the stage to arrest JEWISH PERFORMERS.

A German COLONEL in the audience stands up, waves his pistol above his head and fires gunshots at the ceiling. The tumult stops. The performance hall falls silent. The Nazis stop executing arrests.

COLONEL

No interruptions.

COMMANDER

Yes, sir.

The commander makes hand gestures to the Nazi soldiers. They raise their arms, saluting the Colonel. Almost in unison, they click their heels and stride out.

The Colonel sits down and looks to the stage.

COLONEL

Continue, please.

The performance continues. Rose sneaks out of the hall with other Jews.

EXT. HOSPITAL -- NIGHT

Nazis run through the gate, vandalizing buildings and smearing ambulances with anti-Semitic slogans.

INT. HOSPITAL -- NIGHT

Nazis yell commands in German. JEWISH PATIENTS, DOCTORS, NURSES and CLINIC WORKERS scuttle and bump into each other while obeying orders.

NAZI OFFICER

Stand in lines. Schnell, Schnell.

Jews are pushed into separate rooms to be confined. One RETARDED PATIENT resists and screams for help. A deafening shot silences his pleas.

INT. PATIENTS' ROOM -- HOSPITAL -- NIGHT

DR. BEHR, a dismissed surgeon, scrubs the floor with an INTERN. They are shocked by gunshots from the other room. Through a glass window, they see Nazis heading toward their room.

Dr. Behr and the intern help Jewish patients hide in a closet. The closet is full, with no more space for Dr. Behr and the intern.

Two Nazi soldiers storm in and drag the intern out of the room with them. Dr. Behr is unseen, behind a curtain.

EXT. STAIRS -- HOSPITAL -- NIGHT

Dr. Behr rushes down the stairs, a Nazi soldier close on his heels.

INT. MORGUE -- HOSPITAL -- NIGHT

Dr. Behr enters the morgue where DEAD PATIENTS are covered with white sheets. Dr. Behr lies next to a dead patient and covers himself with a sheet.

The Nazi soldier reaches the morgue to search for the escaping Jew. He takes the white sheet off one of the dead bodies, smells the odor and grimaces. He covers his nose with his handkerchief and rushes out of the morgue.
