Some thoughts on what is happening in Xin Jiang

I have been following the recent news on revolt in Xin Jiang. Lots of blogs here cover the racial differences between 汉 and 维吾尔 . One incident somehow is kinda ignored is what happened to those Journalists from Hong Kong. According to the XinJiang Gov., these journalists are part of the groups promoting the revolt. If you have a chance to watch the 翡翠新闻 , you will realize these government officials lied again, as they always do. Why?

Despite of other major differences, one common and yet troubling finding from the history of any communist county is that the governing party has strong tendency to lie to the people. This hasn't changed in China at all even the country has often been praised for its economical prosperity. Various versions of 皇帝的新装 are updated everyday, if you follow the news. The catastrophic consequence of this is that people lost the trust towards the government, the society, and themselves. I think every Chinese can feel that if they have lived many years in China. Even before 1949 or 1950's, people were still able to trust each other. It seems that everything went downhill after the infamous Culture revolution. After the revolution, people suddenly realized that we can get away with lying because the superior leaders do that as well. The guilt of lying is now gone. I love China but I can't stand such a large scale of distrust which is worsened every day. This can't be resolved in a short period of time no matter how rich the people are. I bet if there is any accurate survey on trust in China, the result must be startling.

How can a party help the people to restore their trusts after so many years of lying and yet continue manipulating the news on daily basis? I don't think that is going to happen. Economic property is certainly the answer. That's why sometimes we observe that the poorest people are probably the most honest and innocent people, especially in rural area.

I really hope someday we can stop lying to each other. That's probably the beginning of the hope.
