选不选法语学校?

以下记的是我的挣扎。结果是尊重了女儿的意愿,送她去了法语学校。看她能不能坚持下来,又能坚持多久。

My daughter was born in USA and now she lives with me in Canada. Since I love Chinese, she is able to speak both English and Chinese fluently. She could even read and write Chinese a little bit.

She is going to be a Grade one student after this summer. She determined to go to French Immersion program. This program is NOT internationally recognized. Plus I have no capability to tutor her. I tried to reminder her of my limitations but for some reasons she does not change her mind through her SK.

My biggest worry is how she handle this issue after she is back to USA. Eventually she will study in US and the trilingualism might not a bonus to her. Also how could I find school who recognize her curriculum? According to Canadian educational guides, the French Immersion will use same curriculum as that of English program, the only difference is the language. If my daughter is struggling in the French program, she can switch to English one without any problem.

My daugther is already bilingual. Although she might be the only kid who could speak Chinese in the town when we live, her Chinese is NOT as good as her peers in China. Her Chinese limits to daily conversations. If she were asked to describe something, she could only use simple words to do it. Sometimes she does need help to find words.

If she starts to pick up French, I really do not know how deeply she could grasp it. May she master all three languages in a superficial level.

She might be back to US in five years. She definitely could not grasp French in five years, and she would forget most of the oral parts she learns from French Immersion. And her English might not as good as her US peers. Would that affect her study in US?

I will register her in the French program anyway since it is her choice. She could make such big decisions by herself at 5 and as a mom, I am partially perplexed and partially proud of that. I hope she would be happy about that decision in the future, and I hope I could be of any help, like seeking advices. I was not brought up in North American educational systems and I do have trouble to be confident about the capability of helping her. Just it.
