A Short Day in Human History, A Big Leap in Bobo\'s World

I bought Bobo a 20 inch bike from a Pro bike shop back in April because she wanted a bike that has hand brakes, but she is a bit short for most of the bike of that size. I wanted to make sure she is safe with whatever we ended up with. The very first day, in the 45F windy rain, Bobo was determined to ride her new bike. She didn't have any problem at all despite the obvious contrast of her little body against this monstrous size bike. She was at ease with the hand brakes too.
Surprisingly, problems start to surface after a while. At first she was afraid to brake because she gets a jolt every time. Then she was too afraid to get on the bike. When she finally got over that after three weeks of encouragement, and step by step progress, she suddenly decided she couldn't stop on her own. It has been a couple of months, she rarely rides her bike. She said she was not interested, but she was really afraid of having to stop where there was no one to help. This despite all my gentle reminder of her stopping on her own for the last three months already; out of patience advice of just doing it and you won't get hurt anyway; and even coersions like "Maybe you are not ready for this hand brake bike like you said you were. We could just return the bike and ride our smaller bike for now"...
This morning, I suggested to Bobo to go bike riding and insisted her trying her new bike againe, and pinky sweared to help her stop. She got on the bike. When we got to the spot where we normally have to stop and carry our bike over some stairs, she stopped on her own. She made me promise to help her stop again before she got on, but she managed to stop on her own again at the basket ball court. She was so proud of herself, all she could think today all day was bike riding.
We rode to Starbucks half a mile away with lots of hills and had a cup of hot coco. Bobo stood in line to order the drink while I sat outside with our bikes and read the newspaper. She didn't want a kid's version. She ordered medium size so "I can share with you". It was hot unlike kids' version which they usually cool down. I must have asked the same question the clerk asked as well, Bobo promptly said with all proudness: I don't care.
This afternoon, again and again, we came out riding bikes. Bobo's speed of improvement is very impressive. She can turn sharp corners; she rodes so fast that I could barely keep up with her while circling around the school playground. She does not even have to slow down at the corners, something I have trouble with. By end of the day, Bobo has moved on her next goal -- riding with only one hand on the bike, so she does not havet to stop the bike entirely before she can scratch her own nose:-)
Life with a kid is just like that. Every one we made leaps, forwards and progress. Kids must be God's way of granting us adults the continued joy of growing, gaining new skills and knowledge. Bobo's joy is always shared with Mommy, and keeps my heart young and humming.
