一些过去的小事 (四)

I did many improvisation exercises, sometimes I played the wife of this 20 something Italian guy who worked as a plumber, I just couldn't see myself in that role, I guess I was acting awkward. Sometimes I was playing a waitress in a restaurant taking orders and dealing with picky customers. I wasn't a very talented actress, nothing worth noting.

Towards the end of the term, we had to prepare a scene where each of us make 2 phone calls, to anyone you like. Try to reveal 2 sides of the the same character that are completely different yet believable.

My first phone call was about a young woman in a long distance relationship. I played a girl who received a phone from her boyfriend from far away, Europe, as a matter of fact. She was trying to break up with him for a while, but somehow she still talked to him in a tender voice. She tried to reason with him that this was not going to work out, that this situation was too hard, that she couldn't see how she could make it, that she's afraid of the future, and not strong enough to wait for him.

My second phone call was about a Corporate woman having a tough call with the another department. She was angry that they couldn't deliver the products as they promised and upset that her deadline was in jeopardy as a result. She was clearly frustrated with the Corporate bureaucracy, but remained her business-like, very assertive and no non-sense style.

When I was done, I could tell that Michael was very impressed.

He said:"Wow! What a story! That poor girl! You could hear her pain, her struggle, her guilt, and her inner conflict, she still loves him but couldn't bear being alone and hopeless. But oh my, why would a young girl so full of life being trapped like that? Oh please let her go..."

He went on:"As to the second phone call, you did everything right, but something is still missing. That woman you portrayed, she's tough, she means business, but there is no depth, it's 2 dimensional. I'm not sure if that's the best you could do."

I stood there, trying my best to fight back tears. I was so happy, so relieved.

Somehow, feeling the empathy from an almost complete stranger meant so much to me.
