From Census Bureau, 数据

Median household income, 2004
Santa Clara County $68,842
California $49,894

Suppose 5% increase over the past four years, it's $83678 for Santa Clara county (which is highest in bay area, FYI) . Note it's household income. My guess is that the real number is lower than that.

About the average salary, it is just a joke. Suppose for a group of five, four people earn $50,000,the other one is a CEO earn $300,000. The average salary is $100,000. It's definitely skew the picture here. Only one people can afford the high house price. You should look at the median number for household for median house price justification.

For so called "good school district" in Bay area (I am not going to talk about the miserable public education system in California this time), if you have only one kid, you don't need to buy into it. It doesn't make any economic sense. So most people with two or more kids buy into good school district. If you talk about average number, why don't you divide it by the number people you have in that house, which is >=4?
