BRAMPTON, ONT. - Two people are facing unspecified charges in the case involving the
murder and abduction of nine-year-old Cecilia Zhang, who disappeared last October from
her parents' home in Toronto.
Peel Regional Police Chief Noel Catney told some Toronto media on Thursday morning that
the pair have "no known tie" to the Zhang family.
"There has been an arrest in the matter. Two people have been charged," Catney told
Toronto radio station CFRB.
FROM MAR. 28, 2004: Police confirm Cecilia Zhang's body found
The force has called a news conference for 1 p.m. ET Thursday to release details of
what it is calling a "major development."
For months after she vanished, intense ground searches, police bulletins across Canada
and the United States and the offer of a substantial reward failed to turn up any sign
of Cecilia.
Police speculated that she had been kidnapped for financial gain, but her parents never
received a ransom demand for their only child.
A hiker found her remains in Mississauga on March 27.
Following the discovery of her body, Toronto police announced they were
investigating "persons of interest." The task force looking into the child's
disappearance has focused on Chinese boarding students and has travelled to China as
part of its investigation.
