Chapter 10 The second fight against White Bone Demon

1.

The demon escaped into the sky. Standing on a cloud, he gnashed
his teeth in hatred.
“The dirty monkey!” cursed stealthily the demon. “I was told he was
somewhat capable. It’s only today that I know he really lives up to his
reputation. Without knowing me, Tang Monk was going to eat the food. So
long as he lowered his head and had a smell, I would be able to catch him.
Who could have expected that the dirty monkey came back at that critical
moment and saw through my scheme? I was nearly stricken by his cudgel. I
cannot let the monk go unpunished. Otherwise, all my efforts will come to
naught. Let me go down and make fun of him.”
Leaving the cloud and coming down to the hillside, the demon changed his
identity suddenly. This time he turned into an old woman at the age of over
eighty. With a walking stick in hand, she walked over, one step and one
cry.
Seeing the old woman, Pig Bajie was greatly surprised.
“Master!” cried out Bajie. “What a nuisance. The old woman is coming
here to look for her daughter!”
“Looking for whom?” asked Tang Monk.
“The girl my brother killed must be her daughter,” said Bajie. “This
old one must be her mother.”
“Don’t talk rot!” Monkey King said to Bajie. “The girl is eighteen.
But the old woman is eighty. How can a woman give birth to a baby at the
age of over sixty? There must be a fraud. Let me go and have a look.”

Stepping up, Monkey King recognized the demon in disguise. Without waiting
for explanation, he ruthlessly struck the old woman in her head with his
golden cudgel. Seeing Monkey King’s cudgel coming down, the demon resorted
to his old tricks immediately. He left a false dead body on the ground and
fled without any delay.
Seeing this, scared to death, Tang Monk fell off his horse. Without demur,
he set to muttering Incantation of the Golden Hoop, time and again, no less
then twenty times. Monkey King suffered from a headache which was too
terrible to bear and made him rolling on the ground.
“Don’t mutter anymore, Master!” rolling over to his master, Monkey King
asked for pardon. “Just say what you want.”
“I’ve nothing to say,” Tang Monk said. “I repeatedly advise you to
correct your mistakes. But you don’t listen to me and, worse of all, don’
t hesitate to commit manslaughter continuously. You killed innocent people
one after another. Why?”

“She is a demon,” said Monkey King.
“You wild monkey. What are you driveling about?” Tang Monk scolded. “
How can it be that there’re so many demons here? You’re really a bad guy.
You just want to do evil instead of good works.
Go back!”
“Master,” said Monkey King. “You ask me to go back once again. I’m
willing to go but there’s only thing which is quite improper.”
“What’s improper?” ask the master.
“Master,” Bajie cut in. “He wants to share the luggage with you. As a
monk, he lives with you in these several years, he doesn’t want to go back
empty-handed. Unwrap your bundle and pick out some old clothes and give
them to him, such as a shirt or a hat.”

Hearing this, Monkey King exploded with rage.
“Shut up your dirty mouth!” Monkey King cried to Bajie. “I always act
in accordance with the Buddhist disciplines. I’m neither greedy nor
jealous. How can I have the desire to share luggage with our master?”
“Now that you’re neither greedy nor jealous, why don’t you go?” asked
Tang Monk.
“To tell the truth,” said Monkey King. “When I lived in Water-curtain
Cave in Mt. Flower-fruit
five hundred years ago, I once defeated countless monsters with my magic
skills and especially my golden cudgel. I was therefore named Monkey King.
I can do what I want. But ever since becoming a monk and your disciple, I’
ve been unable to do anything freely. It is all because you had my head
firmly banded with a hoop. If my head is still banded by the hoop, how can
I have the face to go back? If you really don’t want me anymore, please
take back the hoop. You can use it to band anyone’s head. If so, I’ll be
happy. In view of our mutual relationship between master and disciple, I don
’t think you have the heart to refuse my last request.”
Greatly surprised, Tang Monk said, “Wu Kong, Goddess of Mercy only taught
me the Incantation of Hoop to band your head. She never told me how to
remove the hoop.”
“If there is no incantation to remove the hoop, you’d better take me,”
said Monkey King.
“All right, stand up.” said Tang Monk. “In view of this case, let me
forgive you one more time. You should never again do violence to anyone.”
“Dare not again! Dare not again!” said Monkey King.
After making the promise, Monkey King supported his master onto his horse
and went forward continuously.
