Usually the beginning of a film can tell me how good a movie will be. This exactly happened when I began watching the movie ‘ Wimbledon ’ last Saturday. It made you feel like watching a tennis match by letting you hear the sound of the ball hitting and bouncing from one side of court to the other. Accordingly the spectators were oscillating their heads from right to left, left to right, back and forth, following an imaginary flying ball from side to side. It is a slower version than a real tennis rhythm but with an artistically exaggerated pops. The great unique tennis rhythm and sound give you such a wonderful feeling of attending an important tennis match. I thought I liked this only because I am an active tennis player. But I was wrong. Other moviegoers, who knew nothing about tennis, have expressed their same feelings about this scene on the Internet.

From time to time I don’t mind to go and see a light movie in a theatre, but the ‘ Wimbledon ’ caught my eves right away because of its involving tennis. I knew there are very few movies about tennis. Before “Wimbledon’ the only such movie I had ever seen was the one about the tennis gender match between Bobby Riggs and Billie Jean King in 1973. Lacking of tennis related films was probably mainly attributed to the difficulty in making an actor look like a real tennis pro on court, as it was the case in Bobby vs. Billie’s. But the ‘ Wimbledon ’ really surprised me. Thanks to the technology, everything on court in the movie looks so real: The serves, ground strokes, topspins, slides, as well as overheads and volleys! Suddenly all your concerns about the fakeness disappeared.

The movie caught the emotional part of tennis very well too, when it showed what was going on in a player’s mind right before each serve at a big point. The film also gave me a few touching moments through the movie. Afterward I saw someone complained about the lacking of original romantic ideas in the plot. But to me it is unique and original, as long as the tennis gets involved.

I must haven’t paid a regular movie ticket for a very long time, because I was a little surprised when I was asked to pay $9.25 for the movie at our local theatre. The cashier said the bargain ticket time ended at and the movie I was going to see started at . But after the movie, I felt it was well worth the money I paid.
