Regurgitant Blood Flow: Tricuspid Regurgitation

The parasternal RV inflow, the parasternal short-axis, the apical four-chamber, and the subcostal views are helpful in detecting tricuspid regurgitation (TR). TR appears in systole, as blood flow entering the RA through the closed TV.

This parasternal short-axis view shows tricuspid regurgitation in the RA in systole. The TR jet is turbulent, as indicated by the mosaic of blue, white, and orange. The red adjacent to the TR indicates normal systolic RA filling.

In this apical four-chamber view, frozen in systole, TR images with an enhanced velocity map. The mosaics of blue and yellow indicate high velocity, turbulent blood flow moving away from the transducer. The red in the atria represents normal systolic filling.
