I am an Asian immigrant who came to Canada in 1987 after being selected by a Federal Immigration officer who believed my knowledge and skills would benefit Canadian cuisine. Unfortunately, over the past 38 years, after bringing my family to Montreal, I was unable to contribute to the culinary field as planned. Instead, my family and I personally suffered under many aspects of Canadian systems — including government administration, healthcare, inspections, and both civil and criminal justice. The costs we paid were devastating: my wife lost her life, our restaurant businesses got fraud by the person who appointed for legal representative and family supporter, and I was forced to file for personal bankruptcy.
While continuing to seek fair justice, I was wrongfully confined to a mental institution, where I was locked in for lifetime and forced to take medications. After of my struggling, I got release and control the side effects of antidepressant treatments, I quit disability coverage and moved to the village of Standard in Alberta. There, I invested over half a million dollars to start a hotel, restaurant, and bar business, hoping to rebuild my life and contribute to the local economy.
I thought relocating to a small town would allow me to start fresh. Instead, it turned into another nightmare. The mayor of the village openly declared in my bar: “I am the king of this village; my words are the rules you must follow.” When I refused to keep my bar open past 3:00 a.m. — whether or not he and his friends were present — he saw it as a challenge to his authority. As a result, he and his allies abused their power, engaging in ongoing harassment and legal intimidation.
The village office violated the Municipal Government Act section 610 by unlawfully removing a mobile home someone had placed on my hotel’s backyard. They charged me illegal storage fees, hid them in my property tax bill, and inflated the charges to $29,000, ultimately leading to an illegal public auction of my hotel.
I believed these issues could be resolved through proper channels, but I was wrong. My complaints to Alberta Municipal Affairs, the Human Rights Commission, the Ombudsman, and even the King’s Bench Court and the Court of Appeal were dismissed — not on the merits, but through technicalities in court rules. The courts ignored the facts, and I was left with no clear path to fair justice.
As a result, I had no choice but to abandon both my hotel and residential properties. With help from an emergency doctor, social workers, and several organizations, I escaped the village and relocated to a senior residence in Calgary.
