On May the 12th, an 8.0 earthquake hit Wenchuan City, Sichuan Province located in the south west part of China. According to the results closed on May the 18th, 2:00 PM local time, 32,477 were dead, 220,109 injured, 5 millions homeless.
The most touching scenery however goes beyond all the bloody pain, the tears and crying of babies, parents, brothers and sisters, husbands and wives… it goes right to the peek point of how people love and support each other and how people sacrifice their own lives for others.
Please allow me to briefly share two stories (among thousands) to show how high love can reach and how it touches the very fundamental of human lives.
1. When the rescuers found her, she was already dead, crushed by the collapsed house. Through all the debris, people can see her posture: both knees down, upper body forward with hands holding her body, like praying to the heaven.
When the rescue team moved on to the next collapsed building, the team leader felt strange about the posture of the dead lady. He went back, checked again and shouted to his team: ”Come back, there is a baby alive under her body!” After a hard try, they carefully cleared the debris around the dead woman. Lied under her body was her well-wrapped baby, about three or four month old. Because of her mother’s protection, he was not hurt at all. He was still sleeping when he was taken out.
The doctor came over to perform the routine check and found out a cell phone tucked under his blanket. He took a look at the screen, an already written message is there: “my loving baby, if you can survive, please remember I always love you.”
The doctor, who is so used to seeing life and death, cried. The cell phone was passed along emotionately…. (See attached picture 1)
2 A 20-year-old female teacher did the same: use her body to cover her students, just like they were her babies. She rescued 13 students and was killed by the deadly crash….(See attached picture 2 & 3)
The attached picture #4 shows another baby who was rescued.
Picture#5 shows a female police breast feeding the motherless babies
After I saw all the sad and moving pictures and read all the painful yet hopeful stories, I decided to share it with my fellow co-workers here in SH, just to show my respect and my love for those who are so brave, so loving and caring in such a disaster. The battle of life and death is still going on and the people of Sichuan province are facing huge challenges of recovering from the deep wound and pain and almost total destruction. They need help.
