Olivia\'s Curiosity about Her Parents\' Marriage

(2008-01-26 20:37:52) 下一个

Today, Olivia and I had some mother-daughter alone time together. On the way back home, I forgot what we were talking about but we had the following conversation.

Olivia - "Mom, you are a Chinese girl, why did you leave China and come to the United States?"

Me - "Well, I left because I wanted to continue my education here. I came for the graduate school here after I finished my college."

Olivia - "Is that where you met Daddy?"

Me – "Yes, Daddy and I went to the same school."

Olivia – "Was daddy cute when you first met him? Was he chubby?"

Me (unexpected) – "Haha…cute? What you mean by cute? Daddy was slimmer back then."

Olivia – "Oh you know, when he looked at you… did he look at you with puppy eyes? Or you know (was he) cute like Teddy (her hamster)? (She put both her arms around her chest and leaned her head towards them as if she were cuddling with Teddy and totally mesmerized by its cuteness)You know how cute Teddy is!"

Me (laughing as she compared her daddy to a hamster) – "Yeah, he was cute."

Olivia - "Did you have a boyfriend before Daddy?"

Me – "Yes."

Olivia – "Oh! Did he fight with Daddy for you then?"

Me (laughing) – "No, me and my old boyfriend were no longer together so he didn't even know about Daddy. Why do you think they would fight though (asked on purpose) ?"

Olivia – "Because like deer, sometimes two male deer can like the same female deer and they would fight for her with their antlers. The one who drops the first will lose the girlfriend to the other. So I thought if both of them liked you, they would fight for you."

Me – "Well, that makes sense."J

Olivia – "Mommy, did you speak English before you came to the United States?"

Me – "I learned English for many years but I didn't have the opportunity to speak that much."

Olivia – "So did you accidentally speak Chinese to Daddy on your first date?"

Me – "No."

Olivia – "What was your first date with Daddy?"

Me – "We played with tennis together"

Olivia (knowing that Daddy is a prety good tennis player) – "Tennis? Were you bad at tennis?"

Me – "Olivia?! Why would you think I was bad?  No, I am okay for a girl but Daddy is a lot better."

Olivia – "Did you take Daddy for a date in China?"

Me – "No, we were already married the first time I took Daddy there. It was two years before you were born."

Me – "Olivia, Why are you asking so many this kind of questions today?"

Olivia – "I don't know, I just think it is weird that you and Daddy are married. You are a Chinese girl, you should marry a Chinese guy."

Me – "Is that right! Would you feel weird if you marry a Chinese guy?"

Olivia – "No, I am both Chinese and American, so it is not weird for me to marry either. But it would be weird if I marry a Korean guy."

Me (laughing) – "Why?"

Olivia – "Because I don't speak Korean!"

Me – "So? It will be okay if he speaks English, right? Daddy doesn't speak Chinese."

Olivia – "Yeah… But I still think it is weird that you and Daddy got married."

Haha…what can I say baby? You will learn later that in terms of love, anything can happenJ.
