Michael

We missed the Kindergarten lottery during our trip back to China last fall (2005), so Olivia ended up in a daycare different from Evan. I noticed after a week or two when I asked what she liked to do in the new daycare, the answer was always she and a bunch of girls chasing the boys around on the playground, particularly a boy named Michael.

So I paid special attention to Michael during my drop off times. Turned out he is about the same height as Olivia, if not taller, has brown hair and is very handsome. No wonder.

About two months ago, after putting the kids to sleep, my husband came to me: “Funny thing happened today. While I was reading a book to them, out of nowhere Olivia said to me: ‘Daddy, I do not know what happened, but I just fell in love with Michael.’”.

So the next day, I asked Olivia after the pick up whether she had played with Michael that day.

She said: “We almost kissed.”

“What? You guys are moving way too fast! Tell me what happened! ” I asked.

“Well, today while I was playing with Michael, we looked into each other’s eyes and found our eyes are so beautiful that we both fell to the ground. I felt like giving him a kiss so I grabbed his shoulder and tried to kiss him. He was going to kiss me too but all the boys around us started to scream ‘Ah….’, so Michael said to me: ‘Be patient!’  That is why we almost but didn’t kiss today.”

Okay, this sounds a little too bizarre. Would six year olds do something like this?

I am not sure, so I asked: “Did all these really happen?” Olivia started giggling and said “No, I just made it up.”

Now why would a not even 6 year old make up something like this? I do not know what has gotten into her little head, probably too many princess movies. We told the story to daddy after we got home and daddy asked Olivia to remember that any boy who wants to kiss her has to get the permission from daddy first. Olivia said “Okay.”

About two weeks ago, Olivia came home and told us “Michael and me kissed today.” Daddy said: “What? Remember what I told you before that the boy has to get my permission to kiss you?” Olivia giggled and said: “I thought about it but I forgot it when we kissed.” Well, I do not think they really kissed.

A week and a half ago, we took a spot in the Kindergarten program at Olivia’s old daycare (same as Evan’s) that just became available so that I do not have to drop them off and pick them up at two different daycares everyday. We decided to give out the Valentine’s cards to all her friends on her last day at the new daycare which was last Tuesday.

I remember last Monday night while she was signing the cards, she especially came to show me the card she prepared for Michael looking very happy. “This one is for Michael, hehehe…He is the best boy, I like him the most.” She then kind of danced back to her table with her head bounced left and right. You can just tell that this Michael boy really has a special place in her heart.

The last day with Michael finally came and went. On the way home last Tuesday, Olivia said to me: “Today, I said to Michael ‘I love you, you are my boyfriend and I am going to marry you’ ” (够直白的- so direct, sweetie. You know your mother would never have the guts to say something like that to a boy).

So I asked “Did he say he is going to marry you too?”

“Yes.” She paused for a few seconds and then threw me off the chair.

“But I know he is tricking me. He is not going to marry me and he does not love me either. He is happy that I am gone.”

My heart tightened. Something made me want to cry. Poor little girl, I would have hugged her if I were not driving. So Michael is really her first crush instead of her “boyfriend”. No wonder I have never seen him being specifically nice to her and I never saw that “best buddy” chemistry between them which I saw between Olivia and her “ex-fiancés”.

I tried to cheer her up “Well, you are going to meet a lot of old friends tomorrow in your new class, they are all very excited to see you (I heard from the teachers that her coming back was the talk of the day for the Kindergarten class). Christopher is there too (the son of my friend).” She said: “I know, and Christopher can be my boyfriend in the new class.”

Baby, apparently you did not “fall hard” for Michael (sounds silly to use this word for a 6 year old). While you probably will have many crushes in the future, you will learn that you may not get over them as easily as this oneJ.
