Chernivtsi Rescue operations in Kyivs Sviatoshyn district ended only in the early afternoon yesterday. 130 rescuers and 21 vehicles from the State Emergency Service of Ukraine worked for over 30 hours to remove more than360 tons of rubble, under which the Russian Armed Forces had buried dozens of families, hitting the nine-story residential building where they lived on Sunday night.
Eleven more people, in addition to the 44 already known, were rescued, while four others, including a two-month-old baby, died.
The peace efforts that is, the lack of resolution from US President Donald Trump and the ineffectiveness of actions by the rest of the international community have resulted in the most intense Russian attack since the start of the war:dozens of glide bombs, along with 850 drones and various missiles, swept through about forty localities in Ukraine on the night of September 7th. Nearly 200 more continued this inhumane destruction yesterday, once again targeting Ukraines civilian infrastructure.
For the first time since the war began,even a government building in the heart of the capital was hit, pierced by the 450 kg warhead of a 9M727 Iskander cruise missile, which luckily did not detonate. Damaged by a barrage of Russian Geran-2 drones,the 1,700-meter-long Kryukivsky Bridge was also affected, temporarily stopping car and rail traffic across the Dnipro River between the two sides of the Kremenchuk district in Poltava oblast.The Trypilska thermal power plant, located in Obukhiv district, was once again targeted, leaving several districts of Kyiv oblast without power.
Deliberately targeting the Ukrainian civilian population, these attacks continue almost without pause asRussia tries to maximize damage to Ukraines power generation facilities, electricity transmission and distribution networks, and gas systems. Just an hour before this article was published, Russian aircraft again struck the DTEK enrichment plant in the Donetsk region. On August 26, it targeted a mine belonging to the same company, killing one worker and wounding three.
As TopLead analysts noted,those who claim this strategy is retaliation for Ukrainian attacks on Russian hydrocarbon refinery and storage infrastructure are lying, because the Russian Federation has never stopped targeting Ukraines energy system. In the first half of 2025, it caused damage to that infrastructure 61 times, firing more than 600 drones and other missiles of various types at it. As usual because this is the Russians standard warfare tactic in the autumn offensive,Moscow will intensify these attacks, plunging Ukraine into darkness and cold. Since the beginning of September, over 2,000 Russian high-explosive drones, nearly a thousand cruise missiles, and about ten ballistic missiles have already been fired for this purpose.
Its pointless to expect that any diplomatic effort will somehow satisfy a dictator who openly turns diplomacy into a mockery. Vladimir Putin has no plans to stop the war he started. He will find opportunities as long as Washington permits it, and funding as long as Brussels decides to halt financing his terror. Reading on Bloomberg that among the possible measures of the 19th package of European sanctions against Moscow, restrictions on the operation of Russian payment and credit systems and cryptocurrency platforms are being considered whennearly two billion euros flow from the EU to Russia each month for oil, gas, and LNG purchases, is an outrage.
According to analysts at Ember, with 4 billion cubic meters (bcm) imported annually, Italy is the largest consumer of Russian gas in the EU. The Czech Republic is second with 2 bcm, and France is third with 1.7 bcm. With an overall increase of 18% over 2023, the EU collectively purchased 38 to 45 bcm last year. Belgium and France rank second and third in Russian LNG imports, and they continue to buy more every year, even during wartime.
Its hard to call willing countries that claim to defend Ukraine but finance those thousand missiles a night, purchasing record amounts of the very energy sources Russia is depriving it of.
