第一共和银行起伏叹

自从三月初硅谷银行（Silicon Valley Bank）出事后，第一共和银行（First Republic Bank，股票代码 FRC) 就进入大众视野。

受硅谷银行牵连，FRC 股票惨遭三次大跌。第一次是 硅谷银行事发后，FRC 从 120多美元一下跌到30美元。之后又从30美元跌至 12 美元。昨天，又从两位数跌到一位数。

刚才看了一眼，FRC的股价不到7块。下面是FRC一年的股票价格图。

今天有空，查查该银行的历史。

敢称“第一共和银行”这么一个响当当的名字，想必历史悠久，至少也是个百年老行吧。

其实不然。第一共和银行1985年才成立，历史不到40年。成立时也就是“七八个人，几条抢”，只有一家营业所。注册资本区区不到一千万美元。

该银行的网站上是这样介绍的：

“On July 1, 1985, we opened our doors at 201 Pine Street in San Francisco with fewer than 10 colleagues and only one office. With an enterprise value of $8.8 million, we were one of the smallest banks in the United States, out of approximately 14,000.”

1980年代中期，美国有14000家大大小小的银行。今天，美国银行总数不到5000家。原因不外乎银行倒闭、合并和收购。

这期间，美国银行业经历了两次大规模的危机。一次是80年代后期至90年代中期的 储蓄及贷款危机（savings and loan crisis）。另一次是我们都经历过、想必仍记忆犹新的2008-09年国际金融危机。

我没有跟踪第一共和银行在这两次金融危机的表现。但肯定表现不俗，因为到了2020年，第一共和已成为全美第14大银行。其企业价值（enterprise value) 愈190亿美元。

据该银行的网页介绍：

“By our 35th anniversary, in July 2020, we had over 5,000 colleagues across more than 80 offices in seven states. Through organic growth, First Republic has become the 14th largest U.S. bank with an enterprise value greater than $19 billion. This represents a record of growth in total enterprise value of 25% per annum compounded for 35 years.”

与业绩相匹配，第一共和银行的股价最高时曾飙升至200多美元。

银行增长和股票飙升的秘诀？

在网页最醒目的地方，有这么两段话，耐人寻味：

“First Republic was founded in 1985 by Jim Herbert on the belief that a truly differentiated culture devoted to exceptional client service would result in a very successful banking business.

This has proven true. ”

Proven true, 直到硅谷银行危机事件爆发。

危机爆发后，尽管美联储、美国财政部以及联邦储蓄保险公司 三方迅速发表联合声明，保障所有存款的安全，但第一共和银行还是失去了一千亿美元的存款！

世事难料，久经考验几十年而且 proven true 的经营策略，其实脆弱得经不起一场危机的打击。

这真是莫大的讽刺，令人唏嘘不已。
