重读“双城记”－A Tale of Two Cities

这是一本狄更斯（Charles Dickens) 全集中篇幅相对较短的历史小说，以法国大革命前15年一直到Reign of Terror为时代背景，两代人在伦敦和巴黎的生死故事。

 

年少时第一次读他的中文版，只觉艰深晦涩。那个年纪对世界历史的了解非常局限，而教科书中对法国大革命的高度评价让读者很难理解Reign of Terror，那个革命时代人与人, 阶级与阶级之间的残酷与仇恨。生与死，对一个teenager来说实在是非常遥远，而爱与恨，则又是那么的理所当然。

 

然而狄更斯是我除雨果以外的最爱，来美国工作的第一年就下定决心买了全套的狄更斯。他的小说，包括他的David Copperfield, Great Expectation, Oliver Twist, Bleak House, A Christmas Carol, Hard Times, and Our Mutual Friend, 都是一读再读。这么多年转辗多地，除了一套Harry Porter以纪念和儿子一起阅读的成长时光，唯一留下的也就是这套狄更斯。

 

狄更斯的小说总体来说读来轻松幽默，人物刻画特别是对小人物和反面角色极其精彩，人物栩栩如生，语言生动传神。每年我都会读他的1-2本，用以平衡阅读其他书籍时的厚重感。但是对于这本晦涩的A Tale of Two Cities, 却一直望而生畏。

 

当我再一次在书架上搜索今年要读的狄更斯时，一下子看到A Tale of Two Cities。时代不同，却身同感受。

 

今天的美国，处在一个出门没有安全感的时期，一个社会动荡的时期，一个政治上极左极右的时期。而作为华人的我，看到太多的怀疑，仇恨，暴力和抗争。希望在哪里？humanity在哪里？

 

翻开书的第一页，就看到了著名的quote, 一下子被深深吸引：

 

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way.”

 

狄更斯用他一贯的排比重复，道出了人世间最深沉复杂的情感。爱，可以把一个几乎与世隔绝18年的囚犯“recall to life”, 恨，则可以让一个年轻少女成长为一个冷酷的复仇狂：“Tell the Wind and the Fire where to stop”，读起来让人心惊胆战。

 

但是，Sydney Carton, 却带来了石破天惊的结局。他告诉我们，爱需要sacrifice, 而只有sacrifice, 爱才有意义，人生才有意义。

 

“It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to than I have ever known.”

 

狄更斯用上面另一著名的短句，结束了本书，却让Sydney在文学长河中得到永生。
