Air, laden with moisture from the bay, mists the forest along the coast. Thick carpets of mosses upholster the earth, rocks, and tree trunks with singing greens. Hundreds of lichens in many colors decorate trees and rocks. The most eye-catching hang delicately from tree branches everywhere. Grey-green and hairy, can you see the Old Man’s Beard?

From the Bay of Fundy, the forested landscape of Fundy National Park rises steeply up the Caledonia Highlands. Protected since 1948 from major human activity, the Park forest is increasingly unique within New Brunswick. Now it is at least 65 years old with many areas in the Park being much older than that. The oldest known Red spruce in the world lives here – a 450 year old tree.

From the summits of the Park hills, tumbling streams carve channels deeply into the land making waterfalls as they dance their way to the coast. These troughs in the land invite moist air from the bay to penetrate deeply into the park creating localized conditions for life in these ravines.

The Park’s habitats are home to mammals such as moose, black bear, beaver, raccoon, red fox, bobcat, otter, mink, red and flying squirrel.
